Fernando Torres, or El nino as he’s also known, was signed by Liverpool on the 4th of July 2007, signed by Rafa Benitez for around £20,000,000.
Torres began his career at Atletico Madrid after he’d risen through the ranks, and signed a professional contract aged 15 and made his first appearance aged 16. In his first season in La Liga, 2002/ 03, Torres netted 13 goals in 29 games. Soon after Abramovich took over Chelsea in July 2003 a £28,000,000 was rejected by Atletico’s board. At age 19 Torres was made captain of Atletico and guided them to the 2004 UEFA Intertoto cup, however Atletico lost on penalties 3-1 against Villarreal. On the 2nd of July Torres cut short a vacation in order to finalise a deal with Liverpool, having previously rejected Newcastle and Chelsea. On the 4th of July 2007 Torres completed a move to Liverpool on a 6 year deal.
On the 5th of March 2008, just after being announced as player of the month for scoring 4 goals in 4 games during February, Torres became the most recent player since Nick Balmer in 1946 to score 2 hat-tricks in a row. Torres ended the season in May 2008 with 33 goals in 46 games, still his best tally in his professional career. His tally eclipsed Michael Owens record for goals in a season and he was the first player to score more than 20 goals in a season since Robbie Fowler. Despite having an injury plagued start to the season, Torres came back with a bang, first scoring twice against Everton in the merseyside derby before claiming another 2 goals against Manchester City as we came back in the game to win 3-2. In October Torres was included in the FIFPro World XI team for the 2007/ 08 season. Torres was also nominated for the FIFA World player of the year in December 2008, he came third to Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Two of Liverpool’s best recent performances arguably came within the space of four days. First against Real Madrid he opened the scoring in a 4-0 rout that took the aggregate score to 5-0. Shortly after this Torres got the equalising goal against united to make the score 1-1, however Liverpool went on to win the game 4-1. Steven Gerrard (3) and Andrea Dossena (2) Dossena scored in both back to back victories. On the 29th December 2009 Torres became the fastest Liverpool player to score 50 goals after a goal vs Spurs on the 24th May 2009 . Torres finished the season on 22 goals in 32 games in all competitions. At the start of the 2010/ 11 season Torres re-affirmed his loyalty for Liverpool, and scored his first goal of the season on the 29th August 2010, in a 1-0 win vs West Brom. Fernando Torres scored his final goal for Liverpool on the 22nd January 2011 in a 3-0 win vs Wolverhampton Wanderers.
On the 27th January Chelsea put in a £40,000,000 bid, however this was rejected and subsequently Torres handed in a transfer request. On the 31st January 2011 Torres joined Chelsea for an EPL record breaking £50,000,000. In total Torres scored 81 goals in 142 games. The last time Torres was able to play at Anfield was in 2015 at Steven Gerrard’s testimonial. He received a buzzing reception from Liverpool fans and although he was unable to score it bought much excitement to Liverpool fans to watch Suarez and Torres play upfront together for 45 minutes.
