The 2016/ 17 season was a tough one for 20 year old Joe Gomez, after starting the 15/ 16 season brightly, making 7 appearances for the reds in his debut season, he then ruptured his ACL and was out for 15 months, he came back last season however only managed 3 senior appearances in total, all 3 of which were cups, his other game time was limited to the U23 side, for who he made 8 appearances. After being out for so long due to injury, Gomez is “grateful” to be able to return to football and train. Matched with his determination for progress that has been made over the summer, Gomez is now 100% fit and ready for pre-season. For Gomez this is a fresh start, and a chance to impress Jurgen Klopp, as provided the reds secure Champions league football, there will be a significant increase in games for the reds. And so alongside the likes of Ragnar Klavan and Lucas, Gomez will be looking to secure himself at least as a backup to Lovren and Matip, provided Liverpool continue to be unsuccessful in their pursuit of Virgil Van Dijk. Although there have been the possibilities of loan moves from the likes of Brighton, for now Gomez is keen to just get back onto the pitch and prepare for the season.Having returned back to training on the first day of pre-season training, the 5th July, Gomez was happy to return to training despite facing a difficult day. “It’s going to be difficult” however he’s also confident about getting even fitter after the work Gomez has done over the summer, “it’s just about getting stronger as pre-season progresses”. For Gomez it seems that this pre-season will be a productive one, and should hopefully allow him to be able to kick on and make an impact in the season ahead.
