Despite the lack of football on offer at Burnley, Flanagan realises that there are positives to take from his time with the club. “The main thing I went for was to play football” said Jon.
He also realises though that that although his chances of game time where very much restricted, it turned out to be a great opportunity for Jon to ensure his knee could be nursed back to 100% fitness without the rigours of Premier League football. “Training every day, I felt fit”. This is only good news for both Jon and Jurgen as pre-season has just begun, this makes him very available to feature in the pre-season fixtures. What also helps Flanagan is that he’s a versatile defender, able to be deployed on either the left or right flanks of defence.
Flanagan was also happy that he could approach the 2017/ 18 pre-season without it being “stop-start”, as the last few, Jon claimed had been very much so, this means we should see a much improved Flanagan for the coming season, especially with a full season of training now behind him.
Jon has also been been putting in the hard yards over the summer, ensuring that when he did arrive back for pre-season on the 5th July, he’d be raring to go and already at an advantage going into pre-season. Flanagan ultimately has his sights set on becoming a valued player for the reds, and so this pre-season could really be make or break for Flanagan in terms of his Liverpool career, as with the increase in number of games this season from the Champions League, squad depth will be imperative in order to push on and be successful on all fronts of competitions. For Flanagan, only time will tell if he can stay fit and secure himself in Klopps plans for the coming season.
