It was pre-season last year when Mamadou Sakho was originally frozen out of the Liverpool team. It was a combination of missing meetings and being late for the teams take off that led to him being sent home from Liverpool’s pre-season early and being exiled from the team. He eventually went out on loan to Crystal Palace in 2017, playing eight matches, and more importantly a pivotal role in saving them from relegation. However, Sakho also picked up a knee injury at Palace and hasn’t recovered from this yet. He is now back at Liverpool and there could be some positive news on his Liverpool career.
During the post Tranmere game interview, Jurgen was asked about Sakho’s future, and whether he would feature in any pre-season fixtures, to which Jurgen replied “First of all he needs to get 100% fit, then we will see”. Although this seems vague at first, it could mean a few different scenarios for the centre back. Firstly, if he is bought back in pre-season then he could come back into the first team and everyone would live happily ever after. However, Klopp could be wanting Sakho to return to fitness and play in a few pre-season games in order to ensure he can receive as much money for his transfer as possible. Sakho is currently training alone at Melwood, as he continues his rehabilitation and therefore if he does not return during pre-season and Klopp still wants him to leave, does this justify his £30 million price tag.
From what Klopp has said, it’s hard to judge what Klopp really feels about the situation. Sakho is a top draw defender as far as I’m concerned, and so if he did come back and impress Klopp, would there be any need for Virgil Van Dijk? Is it worth selling Sakho for £30 million and buying Virgil for £50 million? Sakho has shown his defensive ability, as well as being comfortable on the ball, and also his passion, which was something the fans loved him for. Would Klopp be willing to let Sakho return to the team? I know the majority of fans would be happy to see him back. However after the Van Dijk saga Anfield is locked down when it comes to transfer news, and so only time will tell what happens to Sakho.
