Liverpool Vs Sevilla Match Preview.
The Champions League theme will be back in all its glory at Anfield tonight as Liverpool face Sevilla tonight in our first game back in the Champions League proper. Liverpool have been handed a favourable draw this time out and an analytic study by Gracenote Sports: Liverpool have an 81% chance of progressing to the group stage, which is the highest of any British team. City and Utd are at 73% and Chelsea have a 66% chance of qualifying for comparison (BBC Sport).
This is the first chance for Liverpool to get revenge over Sevilla after they beat us in the final of the Europa League in 2016 to win the competition for the third successive season. However, this time out the game is at Anfield and as that campaign showed Liverpool can beat any team on a European night at Anfield and they will be looking to get one over the Spanish side.
One of the major talking points going into the game is the fact that our want to be Judas will be back in the squad for the first time since his very public transfer saga. Now that has been put to bed, I think the sooner he gets back and scoring screamers for the Liverpool the better for everybody involved. He may get an appearance off the bench tonight and I hope that while I do not expect the Brazilian to receive a standing ovation, I do not want the reception to be too frosty either as that will affect the overall atmosphere of the ground which can be crucial for a European night.
Mane’s 3 match ban for the red card that has sparked so much debate across the country means that for me he must play tonight, as he will not be able to play at the weekend. Other than that, I expect Klopp to pick a similar team however I do expect a few rotations to take place. One of those being Loris Karius, who will take to the pitch as the clubs Champions League goalkeeper for the season. I also expect Gomez to play due to Trent’s appearance at the weekend and perhaps Chamberlain may rotate into the team and give one of Can or Winjaldum a rest.
Another possible rotation that I personally would like to see would be a return to left back for James Milner. Last time Moreno played against his boyhood team he put in a questionable performance. Now I do not put that down to a question of his loyalty and professionalism. I see that as more as perhaps the occasion got to his head and that you do have to question the lads big game mentality. As this is our first game back in the Champions League after a long hiatus and it is our biggest home game of the group, I would like to see an older calmer head and leader in the first XI.
Sevilla come into the game after an unsurprising 3-0 win over Eibar and perhaps the most cringeworthy transfer unveiling video of the window where they ???kidnapped’ Jesus Navas from Manchester City. Additionally, Sevilla have also brought back Ever Banega from Inter Milan and bought Luis Muriel, which is probably their most exciting transfer of the window.
My score prediction, 2-1 to Liverpool.
