Liverpool’s so far unsuccessful attempts to prise England midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from rivals Arsenal have been given a massive boost with reports this afternoon suggesting the 23 year old is no closer to agreeing a new contract at the Emirates, putting his future at the club in considerable doubt. The former Southampton star has been courted by Reds boss Jurgen Klopp this summer as the German bids to add quality reinforcements to his squad ahead of the upcoming 2017/18 campaign. This development comes as the Reds were linked with versatile Atletico Madrid attacker Angel Correa earlier today, signalling Klopp’s clear intent to improve the flexibility of his side as the former Dortmund man bids to deliver Liverpool’s first league title in 28 years. Seemingly the former Dortmund boss has earmarked an adaptable attacking-minded player, with the ability to operate in a number of positions across the front line,as a priority this summer with the Reds set to compete on no less than four fronts this coming season. Suggestions this afternoon have intimated that Chamberlain, who has been capped 27 times for his country, is increasingly likely to leave North London this summer, with the chances of him signing a new deal “virtually nil”. Oxlade-Chamberlain, who has been at the Emirates for six years, is in the final 12 months of his contract and talks over a new deal are reportedly no closer to being resolved. The 23-year-old has failed to nail down a regular position during his time at the club and was used at wing-back towards the end of last season, starting on the left in their FA Cup final win over Chelsea. Arsene Wenger said in April it was “vital” for Arsenal to keep Oxlade-Chamberlain, adding “it would be a big damage for us to lose this kind of player”. Speaking yesterday, Wenger remained relaxed regarding Chamberlain’s increasingly precarious contract situation and Chamberlain, unlike outbound misfits Carl Jenkinson, Kieran Gibbs, Lucas Perez, Wojciech Szczesny and Mathieu Debuchy, did travel with the squad to Sydney yesterday ahead of their preseason tour down under. Arsene Wenger, earlier today, spoke of making sure his players honour their contract but it appears he faces a task to keep hold of Oxlade-Chamberlain with the England international one of several players facing an uncertain future at Arsenal with the futures of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil also in doubt due to their contract situation. Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City have all reportedly expressed an interest in the highly rated 23-year-old but Arsenal would be reluctant to sell to a Premier League rival. However, with talks in deadlock and with no further discussions in the pipeline perhaps Oxlade Chamberlain’s days in North London are numbered.
