Jordan Henderson was a new man at the start of last season. He really stepped up into the role of Liverpool’s captain as well as becoming a vital cog in the Liverpool midfield. However, his season was cut short due to surgery on his ankle, which is due to a persistent issue in his achilles.
In the game against Tranmere last night, we where able to see the skipper play for the first time in 5 months. Henderson started the game, playing 45 minutes before being substituted off at half time, along with the rest of the outfield Liverpool players. Once again we were able to see his range of passing and how he figures in a midfield that is stiff with competition going into the new season. Obviously, having more games in the coming season will mean a range of midfielders will be given the chance of game time. However for Henderson is this necessarily a good thing? With more games in a season he’s only more likely to be injured along the way, and it was clear last season that without him our game changed.
However, onto the positives, which is that he is back and fit, Henderson had this to say on his return “It was once to be back on the pitch and being in front of a crowd with the kit on”. Clearly this has been a testing time for Henderson, who seemed to relish the chance just to be able to play some footy again. He said “I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time now, all summer really, so it’s good to finally be out on the pitch and playing with the lads”. Having Henderson back in the team is only going to be a positive thing, he’s a great professional for the team and always puts 100% in. Looking forward to the start of the season Henderson said “We’ve got a good set of lads who want to work hard and I’m sure we will work very hard over the next few weeks and we will be ready for the first game of the season”. Hopefully Henderson will be starting the first game of the season, as his passing ability, tenacious tackling and leadership will be vital in the coming games.
Henderson will be looking to make the most of next season, provided he can stay fit, as provided Liverpool make it through the qualifiers, there will be Champions League football back at Anfield in the coming season. This will also be a fresh start for Henderson, hoping to put behind him a season ruined by injury, and he will hopefully be able to make the most of being Liverpool captain and possibly even some silverware.
