“Liverpool was made for me and I was made for Liverpool”. 12th of June 1974 is a day that will stick in the mind of many Liverpool fans, the day that Shankly retired from football. Shankly was the man who made the Liverpool we know and love today, turning a lowly 2nd division side into a team of champions and laying the foundations for decades of success to come. Bob Paisley, Joe Fagan and the rest of the ???bootroom’ were members of Shankly’s staff before they went on to lead the club in their own way and they owe a lot to the precedent that Shankly started. Shankly’s honours at the club were as follows: League Championship winners (1963/64, 1965/66, 1965/66. 1972/73) Second Division winners (1961/62) FA Cup (1965, 1974) UEFA Cup (Europa League) (1973) and manager of the year in 1973. The Scotts legacy can still be found around Anfield today with the gates that share his name and his statue behind the Kop. He was truly the father of the modern Liverpool we see today. He was also a man of great charisma. He enough quotes to fill an entire scrapbook. Quotes that the Liverpool marketing department have been using for years. Moreover, Bill Shankly installed the ???This is Anfield’ sign that still sits above the tunnel today. He said it was to “Remind the lads who they are playing for and to remind the opposition who they are playing against”. Everywhere you look around Anfield, Shankly still has a presence. The man was truly a colossus in every sense of the word. Here are some of Shankly’s most famous quotes; At Dixie Deans funeral “I know this is a sad occasion, but I think that Dixie would be amazed to know that even in death, he could draw a bigger crowd then Everton can on a Saturday afternoon” About Rodger Hunt “Yes, Rodger Hunt misses a few but he gets in the right place to miss them” “For a player to be good enough to play for Liverpool, He must be prepared to run through a brick wall and then come out fighting on the other side.” “If Everton were playing at the bottom of the garden, I’d pull the curtains” What’s your favourite Shankly moment?
