Paul is here with all of today’s Liverpool news including Andy Robertson being strongly linked with a move to the Reds, Liverpool have made an enquiry with PSG over Peresnel Kaimpembe, Klopp talks about Keita and apparently we’re considering a move for Maxi Romero.

In a decidedly slow news day by Liverpool’s standards- which will have a lot do with the fact that Liverpool’s players and staff have spent the past couple of days travelling; their most strenuous exertions since their arrival in the Far East being trying the Reds’ new third kit for size- it has emerged that Liverpool left back target Andrew Robertson has left Hull’s Portugal training camp as his widely reported £8m switch to Merseyside appears to be reaching a positive conclusion, according to Sky Sports News.
Robertson made 39 appearances in all competitions last season as Hull were relegated from the Premier League and will provide some welcome competition for converted centre-midfielder turned left back James Milner who impressed at points last season but struggled with the intensity of the role towards the end of the season. One would imagine that Robertson would start the season as the veteran former England international’s understudy with the view to eventually succeeding him in the left back position.
Robertson, who unlike Milner is left footed, will give Jurgen Klopp the opportunity to play with an inverted winger and will fulfil the German’s desire to add more left footed options to his squad. With Liverpool set to compete on four fronts next season, Robertson will provide a much needed outlet for the Reds and, at £8m, considering the inflated fees that have been bandied about this summer, could come to represent a bargain for the Anfield club.
The Reds have a distinct history of Scots wearing the famous Red shirt over their storied 125 year history and one would hope that the former Dundee full back will add to the marked success that the likes of his countrymen Ian St John, Graeme Souness, Gary McAllister and, of course, Kenny Dalglish have had on Merseyside over the years.
Liverpool’s reluctance to spend big in this area this summer may have something to do with their continued eagerness to eventually bring Fulham’s Ryan Sesssegnon to Anfield, who will spend next season at Fulham, after the England U21’s international rebuffed the approaches of the Reds and Spurs to stay at Craven Cottage. Perhaps, the Reds are still reticent to spend massively in this area this summer as they, one would expect, will return for the 20 year old, who last month signed a new 4 year deal, next summer and as such are willing to hold out for his services for another year.
Jurgen Klopp has so far been reluctant on expand on whether there has been any progress in other areas including Liverpool’s discussions with RB Leipzig over the services of £75m-rated midfielder Naby Keita. Notably coy on the issue, the German has given little assurances either way regarding whether the deal will be struck. Reports regarding the progress of the deal are decidedly polarised at the moment with reports in the German media maintaining that Keita would be willing to stay put in East Germany with Leipzig chiefs unwilling to budge regarding the Guinean’s availability, a clear contrast with reports in the English media regarding the midfielder’s future. It is expected that the Reds will table a second bid for the 22 year old after their initial attempts to prise him from Leipzig’s clutches were rebuffed out of hand in the coming days and one would expect from the outcome of this bid one will be able to more successfully gauge the openness of the Leipzig hierarchy to the prospect of the Guinean moving to Merseyside.
As one would expect, little mention has been made of Liverpool’s reported interest in defender Presnel Kimpembe, which to me comes across as nothing more than paper talk given that PSG have been gone on record regarding their aversion to selling anyone this window. According to reports in France, the Reds, alongside Mersey rivals Everton, enquired regarding the defender’s availability last week to no avail, although to me it seems highly unlikely that this represents anything more than idle paper gossip, the same of which can be said about Liverpool’s reported consideration of a move for Maxi Romero currently of Argentinian outfit Velez, as reported by the Daily Express today.
Meanwhile I’m now off to buy even more salt to pinch as my stocks are looking perilously depleted following the first 18 days of this summer’s transfer window. It’s called “silly season” for a reason, it seems.
