Throughout the 2016/ 17 season we were given glimpses of Liverpool’s young star Ben Woodburn, who made 9 appearances in all competitions, and even got a goal vs Leeds in the League cup which made him the reds youngest ever scorer. It was the start of what promises to be a very promising career. Unfortunately the young Welshman picked up a minor calf strain while out with the Welsh national team at senior level, and so was unable to feature against Serbia in Wales World Cup qualifier last month. However, it seems that Woodburn is now well back on the mend, this began by Ben returning to Melwood early in order to recover from his strain, and so has been able to work with Liverpool’s rehabilitation coaches ever since. Woodburn is expected to join up with his fellow Liverpool teammates over the weekend in preparation for the beginning of the reds pre-season fixtures, the first Wednesday 12th July vs Tranmere at Prenton Park, however it would seem unlikely that Jurgen would want to risk playing Woodburn, as these friendlies carrying no real importance and especially as it is still only the start of pre-season, with the lads on their third day of training. Looking onwards to the season ahead and once Woodburn is fully recovered, should Liverpool manage to overcome the Champions League qualifiers, there will be plenty of games where Woodburn can be involved somehow. I believe that mostly these will mostly be cup games, and hopefully we can go far in at least one cup. Should Naby Keita sign, it will give the reds so many options in midfield and on the flanks that it seems unlikely Woodburn would be involved in many Premier League fixtures, unlike last year when he started in Liverpool’s 2-1 away win over Stoke City. Hopefully Woodburn will get the opportunities to play with the first team and continue to develop into a top class player.
