Liverpool and Chelsea played out a fairly tedious goalless draw at Anfield last Saturday. Jürgen Klopp stuck with many of the players that brought victory in the FA Cup, but the match was desperately low on quality given the status of the two sides.

One man who has been linked with a potential exit from Stamford Bridge is Mason Mount. The 24-year-old is yet to sign a contract with the west London side, with Liverpool named as one of the sides monitoring the situation should a transfer become a possibility.

On the latest episode of our Journo Insight Show, we asked goal.com’s Neil Jones for his take on the Mount rumours.

Neil said:

“I think he’s a very good player but I think he might need to become a very good player by moving from Chelsea. There’s a little feeling of that, maybe a change of scenery might be one that benefits someone like him. I think there are a lot of facets that you look at and think ‘potential move’ – potential change of scenery, the potential for him, so maybe you think, “No, I’ll go and I’ll go and earn some appreciation, earn some money, a place at the front and centre of a team.” You look at the type of player he is, both lines, he could probably play wide left, or play as a number eight, and he’s done both jobs to a good degree. You wouldn’t say he had a great season this time around, but he’s a creative player, he can score goals, he’s got good set piece delivery, very energetic. If you’re thinking about dynamism, covering the pitch – that’s something Liverpool are lacking at the moment. I think it’s one to definitely keep an eye on. If there was an opportunity there, I think Liverpool would do it.”

Redmen Reacts

Like the often-maligned Jordan Henderson, Mason Mount is a player that is picked and praised by every manager that works with him but is normally among the first to be criticised by fans. Mount would fit in well in a Klopp system and could provide energy that has been sadly lacking in recent months. One criticism would be he tends to lean towards the steady, rather than the spectacular, but the Reds have been crying out for consistency in the middle of the park. Wages could potentially be an issue. According to the Daily Mail, the England star rejected a contract offer of around £200,000 a week before the World Cup, which would put him near the top of Liverpool’s wage structure. Chelsea have been foolish to let this contract impasse sneak up on them. Perhaps Mount feels a little like yesterday’s man, given the number of new arrivals at the club.
