After the events of Anfield on Saturday afternoon, a sunny Sunday in St Helen’s watching Gareth Taylor’s side take on Tottenham was a much-needed tonic as the Reds continued their front-foot style to start the new season. 

Summer signings Natalia Ramos and Vivien Endemann remained in the starting XI from last weekend’s demolition job on Charlton Athletic, whilst Beata Olsson, Ceri Holland and Cornelia Kapocs were looking to add even more firepower to the attack. 

Spurs grew into an even first half and were rewarded for their patience and resilience just after the 40-minute mark when a Signe Gaupset cross deflected off Sam Kerr to become a looping shot that left Khiara Keating stranded. 

Liverpool responded well to the setback but were unable to carve out anything in the way of a meaningful chance despite dictating the closing stages of the half.

Taylor’s side were the dominant force in the second half, and moments before the hour mark their dominance paid off when half-time substitute Aurelie Csillag bravely rose to head home a Fuka Nagano cross. 

Marie Hobinger and Alice Bergstrom were both introduced as the second 45 wore on, with the hosts still in the ascendancy and looking for a way of making their strong performance count. 

Just moments after coming on, Bergstrom went on a strong and ultimately unstoppable run into the area before seeing her shot tipped over the bar and behind for a corner. 

Despite a flurry of late promising moments, it wasn’t to be for Liverpool in their pursuit of back-to-back wins at the start of the 26/27 campaign as they had to settle for a draw but were safe in the knowledge they were perhaps deserving of more.

Speaking after the match, Taylor was understandably positive about what he had seen…

On the performance: “It’s positive for us that we’re coming off the pitch frustrated that we’ve not taken all the points, and that’s a big step for us. We won this fixture last year, but it took us until January to win a game in the WSL. I’m really happy that we’re disappointed. We had them in the first half and completely overran them, and you could tell they were struggling, so not taking the game from there is frustrating.”

On the squad: “Pleased, I think, that you’d always want more to help us in those situations. But, yeah, I think take us back 12 months, it looks a lot different. We’ve got some options on the sidelines which may be usable within the game, earlier in the game, later in the game. I suppose we’ll be really tested when we come to that kind of three-game week, which is pretty intense before the international break. But, yeah, I’ve been impressed with the players. And I think the biggest shift for me has been the improvement of the players who have been in the building for a while. I think there have been some really good steps made by players. I thought Fisk was excellent today. I thought Alex played at the top of her level in terms of energy and desire to do really well. I thought Sam Kerr showed good composure. And, yeah, I suppose when we move up towards the top end of the pitch, we get a lot of situations. We just want a bit more for the number of situations we get.”
