A Great Start To Difficult Month

Article by Imraan Adam – @imadam786On Saturday Liverpool started a run of seven games that could potentially define our season even this early on and as the players walked out into the Wembley sunshine we knew we needed to get off to a good start this month, however I don’t think anybody anticipated us getting off to such a great start. The 2-1 victory against Tottenham at the weekend didn’t do us justice compare to how much we dominated the game, in all honestly we should’ve got at least five or six in that game as we ran Tottenham ragged in their own backyard, well Wembley. What really impressed me about Saturday‘s match is how we pressured Tottenham into making mistakes and by the end of the game they didn’t really know how to keep us out. Tottenham started the match with a back three which soon became a back five then back four, all of this in the first 10 minutes as they struggled to cope with our pressing game. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a team change their system three times in the first 10 minutes and you have to give the lads credit for the way we got onto Tottenham from the start.Looking back to last October when we play Tottenham at Wembley and how they pressured us into making mistakes earlier on and how that theme carried on for the course of the game. Fast forward 11 months and you can see how much this Liverpool team has evolved and improved under Klopp, not just as a defensive unit but also how dominant our midfield is as well as having a front three to die for.I was left really frustrated and disheartened when we left the Wembley pitch last year as I couldn’t for the life of me see where this team was going, even though I had trust in Klopp I still felt like some basic questions needed answering, especially with regards to our defence. This year I didn’t feel like at any point in the game that we were going to do anything but win the game, the midfield was so dominant and the defence was so solid I couldn’t actually see Tottenham scoring and even though our front three had an off day you knew they would be able to create something to put one or two in the nets.I’m actually a little bit disappointed that we couldn’t get more goals at the weekend as I feel like that would of done our confidence a world of good, if you look back at last season and how Manchester City started their first three matches, they weren’t that impressive. They won 2-0 away at Brighton, both goals came late on, they drew 1-1 against Everton and won 2-1 against Bournemouth with another late goal.It wasn’t until they absolutely battered us 5-0 in the league that they really click into top gear and I believe it was that results that gave them the confidence to go on that amazing run and eventually win the league. I can’t help but feel like it might have been a similar situation had we absolutely battered Tottenham on Saturday the way our dominants suggests we should have. With all that said Saturday’s result was amazing and the perfect start to what is going to be a tricky month for us but honestly it’s a month I think we should all be looking forward to. We have to remember that Liverpool are now starting to build up a reputation which means nobody wants to play us and even though we played some very difficult teams in the next month none of those teams are actually going to be looking forward to playing us. especially looking at the PSG game this week, I don’t think it’s a game that they will be looking forward to, even with Neymar and co.It’s crazy to think that even this early in the season we are talking about a run of games that could define our season but in reality that’s exactly what the next month holds and if we can come out of this run of games still undefeated I for one will be very happy. I really do believe that come the next international break there will be no doubt in anyone’s mind that Liverpool have returned back to the elite table of world football. Article by Imraan Adam – @imadam786 Want more LFC content?
