Ross – @rossic89FOOTBALL IS BACK!!!Kind of.In truth, it feels like it never really went away. Probably because it didn’t and the ‘break’ during lockdown was much longer, which was also combined with the painstaking insecurity as to whether football would actually come back or not. This time it’s sound and depending on your views prior to this game, it’s either something to get excited about or it’s just a glorified pre season friendly for a big shiny plate. I’m potentially in danger of getting splinters in my arse here but I’m somewhere in the middle on this.If we win, great. The Community Shield is the best thing since sliced bread and we have a big 50p to add to the list. It also sets a good precedent for the season, it shows we mean business and it puts Arsenal in their place and gives us a good phycological edge over them for in a few weeks time when we meet again. If we lose. Just for fitness, innit. The lads have been training intensely over in Austria and they’ve not had a break. Just a marketing ploy by Maccies et al which means fuck all. Even though we actually qualified for it this year by being the best team in the league and not because City bought won everything. In all seriousness though, as a fan, I want to win every trophy possible. Big shiny plate or not.The Opposition The Gooners head into the match having played their last competitive game less than a month ago. Their FA Cup victory over Chelsea on August the 1st comes with both positives and negatives from a Liverpool perspective. Firstly, they won the thing. That always helps the confidence of players and goes a substantial way into those players buying into Mikel Arteta’s project. However, with an already short turnaround time, Arsenal have had even less time to rest. Besides those English sides playing in Europe. Who got knocked out anyway. Big LOLS.This has only given them time for one pre season game in which they beat MK Dons 4-1. A tiny bit of research into that also suggests most of those players got 45 minutes under their belts, so in terms of an actual pre season, that’s fuck all. They did however start with what you would call a strong XI which may give some indication as to who may start on Saturday evening. New signing Willian was absent for that game so it will be interesting to see if he features in this one. He loves a game against us that lad so I’d prefer it if he was nowhere to be seen unless the lads want to thank him for slotting home the penalty that effectively handed us the league.Arsenal as we know have other substantial attacking threats besides Willian. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is clinical to say the least and someone who can punish you in an instant if you don’t concentrate for 90 minutes, just ask Chelsea. Lacazette although not blessed with pace is a work horse and Bukayo Saka is such a raw, fearless and explosive talent who could cause Liverpool problems. At the back it’s slightly different. Rob Holding scored an own goal on Tuesday night against MK Dons. I can’t decided if he is getting the practice in or he’s just getting it out the way.Basically they are 13/14 Liverpool.

The RedsLiverpool as we all know have had two pre season fixtures with mixed results and lets face it, performances. The first half of the Red Bull Salzburg game was on first glance concerning but then our mate Simon Brundish made me feel a lot better about it all. See Tweet below. So ignoring the bit about Aldo, it puts the game into perspective. The worries sloppiness or lack of concentration from Fabinho, Gomez and others, the poor first touches from Mo, the difference in energy levels between and Salzburg can all get in the bin as far as I’m concerned. We know the quality of those lads, that doesn’t disappear over night. This is real life not Space Jam.There will be players who will need more minutes that others, there will be others who are staking their claim in this Liverpool side for the upcoming season and there will be those lads who will start because of their quality. It will be interesting to see the likes of Brewster, who has been strongly linked with a loan move to Sheffield United as I write this, who was prolific for Swansea the back end of last season and has been sensational in Liverpool’s preseason. I’ll be gutted if he goes out on loan to be perfectly honest. We need the numbers and he has that quality to step in when needed, along with providing him with essential Premier League experience.Other than that I expect us to go strong as we have with the two games we’ve played in the past week. Alisson, obvs. Back four of Robbo, van Dijk, Gomez and Williams. Fabinho, Naby and Gini in the middle, although there are shouts for Curtis Jones in there who has also been impressive of late. The front three. It doesn’t take a genius to work out that Williams will be targeted by Arsenal. With a potential combination of Aubameyang, Saka and Tierney down Arsenal’s left, he’s going to have his fucking hands full. And while we’re on Neco Williams,  I’ve seen some shite banded about on Twitter. Williams will make mistakes. He’s a kid. He needs games at the top level to help his progression. Is he Trent? No. Is anyone? No.Williams has been impressive and is trying to break into one of the best sides in world football. Imagine how fucking hard that is for a second. And he’s filling in for Trent. Also difficult. You only have to look at some of the youth players in the past who couldn’t break into a Roy Hodgson side or the early days of Brendan. You could go back further if you wanted. All dross that never lived up to expectations and never really kicked on. Have some perspective around Williams, he’s doing a sensational job with the weight of the world on his shoulders.Along with Trent other potential absentees include Ox, Shaqiri, Origi, and Wilson. None of those lads featured out in Austria so unless they are one of the six substitutes used at Jurgen Klopp’s disposal I don’t see them anywhere near this game. There’s lads ahead of them in the pecking order as far as I’m concerned.A final note on Liverpool, Naby Keita. He was our best player post lock down and has been impressive in the short stints versus Stuttgart and Salzburg. I expect him to kick on and continue that fine form and I cannot wait to see what he can produce with those small injuries behind him, a run of games and all the confidence that a world class footballer should possess.Naby, along with the others in midfield, will also benefit from the sheer amount of competition that is about in the middle of the park. Curtis Jones is putting in performances worth of a start and James Milner will have his eye on a spot now that he won’t have to play left back anymore. There’s an opportunity here for Naby, Gini, Fabinho, Jones and Milner to impress early on in the season whilst Hendo and Ox are injured. The VerdictI mean, we can all guess can’t we. That’s exactly what I’m about to do here.I’d like to think Liverpool will want some sort of redemption for missing out on becoming the winners last season after City won on penalties . This will also be the first time in a while they will be having an actual game of competitive football for the first time in months. There was the Premier League after lockdown but as soon as that title was wrapped up and they all went on the lash they defo dropped 5%. Arguably more. They will also have had more time to prepare, a better break, intensified training and more time together off the pitch. Arsenal were busy with the FA Cup and trying to save themselves from further embarrassment in the league so they might not be in the right place physically or mentally for this right now. Defo wrote that with red tinted glasses on.Having said that, credit to Arteta, he’s got them playing decent football again and has pulled off some big wins in his short period. He even got David Luiz to defend. So we can laugh and joke all we like but the guy performs miracles.Expect an end to end training ground sesh here. 4-3 to Liverpool before everyone fucks off to play the pointless UEFA United, Dancing on Ice, Big Birthday Bash Bonanza, X-Factor, Get Me Out of Here, Nations League football. Right before the season starts. Just to piss on everyones already hindered preparations.Let me know your thoughts below or on the Twitter.Ross – @rossic89
