Following weeks of excitement around who Liverpool’s potential incomings may be, the Reds seem to be putting themselves into a position where they may have to sell a few players before they being to bring more in.
One name being discussed as to whether he may leave the club this summer is Thiago Alcantara. The reliable David Ornstein, as well as colleague James Pearce, have linked the 32-year-old with a potential move to the rapidly growing Saudi Pro League.
This week on our Transfer Insight show, Dan Clubble spoke with David Lynch to find out what will happen as the player enters the final 12 months of his contract.
David Lynch says Romeo Lavia is Liverpool’s ‘ideal’ midfield signing!
David says that Liverpool are ‘relaxed’ about the whole situation and that they would ‘happily’ let the player see out his deal should he want to stay for one more year.
The reputable journalist further continued: “For the player himself there are clearly going to be big options there for him, with Saudi Arabia being one that has come out recently which might be an attractive option with all the money that is being thrown around there.
“In the quadruple season, I thought he was phenomenal and that we saw the best of him but two out of the three seasons we have seen of him at Liverpool have been quite disappointing. He is injury prone, and I don’t think he is an ideal fit for what Jurgen Klopp wants from his midfield, and I think that [Klopp’s tactics] put a lot of pressure on him physically.”
Aside from injury problems that the player faces, David also discusses how his wages may play a factor in whether Liverpool decides to keep him or not.
“I know a lot of people are saying that the ideal situation is that he stays and then Liverpool’s squad is big enough to be able to pick and choose his games. But, you know, for someone who is on £200k per week and picking his games, that is the real definition of a luxury player.
“I’m not sure Liverpool see the value in it. If Liverpool were to move him on and bring in Lavia it would futureproof the side.”
David also mentions how the player would have to be very happy with the terms offered to him for him to move away to somewhere like Saudi Arabia.
“A lot would have to change, I think the player would have to be really happy with what he is being offered – you know, does he even want to go to Saudi Arabia? Some players have turned it down. Does he want to go to Turkey? Can they pay him enough? All of these things would have to be solved before the player were to move anywhere.”
Redmen Reacts
Albeit the interest appears only recent, it does appear that should things fall into place the Spaniard could be destined to leave Anfield this summer, should the right offer come in. To be honest, it makes the most sense for both Liverpool and Thiago to say goodbye and farewell this summer.
Thiago needs to go somewhere that he can compete week in and week out without having to put his body on the line, and the Reds will be keen to clear some wages and open another slot for a younger and potentially homegrown midfielder.
While it would be sad to see such a world-class technical player leave, it is tough to see where Thiago would fit into the side next season and certainly beyond.
