Article by Lauren Black -@Lauren_Black9Liverpool Women recorded their first win of the WSL Season by beating Brighton one goal to nil. An important three points for the Reds who have now moved up to sixth in the tableSuper Sub BabajideRinsola Babajide saves the day again after coming off the bench to score the winning goal in today’s game, she did a similar thing last weekend against Durham when she scored the equaliser. She started the move off today when she picked the ball up in midfield and ran at the Brighton defence, she then tried to play Sweetman-Kirk in who’s shot was blocked by the defender, it then fell to Babajide with her shot ending up in the bottom corner of the net.It was a great substitution by Vicky Jepson as the team needed some fresh legs and putting both Sweetman-Kirk and Babajide on gave us that extra energy and gave us that bit more directness and they both got themselves into great positions and that’s what led to the goal. Our season is now up and runningA crucial win for the Reds today and it was important for us to get three points on the board after that defeat to Arsenal on the opening day. With a lot going on at the club at the minute and us winning our first game of the season last weekend in the Continental cup, the players knew they had to go out and win today and that’s exactly what they did.A fine display from the team with us having plenty of possession and a few chances to score with Jess Clarke coming close a few times and it was probably a bit frustrating for her this afternoon that she did not come away with a goal but she’s a brilliant player and I’m sure she will score plenty of goals this season.Speaking after the game, Babajide said ‘We knew we needed a result, so we stuck to the game plan and see it through and worked out” and when asked about how difficult the last few weeks have been she said ‘We all work together well as a team and all we do is work hard for each other in training and it’s a good atmosphere’.Credit to BrightonHeartbreaking for Brighton today who put a real shift in, some brilliant players in their squad and coming up from WSL 2 into the top tier is going to be a huge jump but they looked solid today and could have caused us a few problems. The goalkeeper positioning for our goal was definitely questionable as she was too far over to her left but I don’t think she was expecting the shot from Babajide so there was an element of surprise for her in that goal.We spoke about Ellie Brazil being their key player in our podcast last week and she proved that today, she was always looking to create something and at only 19 years old has a bright future ahead of her. It’s now three defeats for Brighton and all by 1-0 scorelines which shows that they are not that far away, a great side with a brilliant manager in Hope Powell who can achieve big things this season.I fully believe that the team can now kick on and prove to people that we can still mix with the big teams, it’s a work in progress and it will take time but I have no doubt that this win today will fill the team with confidence ahead of next week’s game against Reading.Article by Lauren Black -@Lauren_Black9Make sure to check out mine and Amy’s Liverpool Women’s podcast that is out weekly and if you fancy experiencing a Liverpool Women’s game then there are still tickets left for the reading game next weekend so head down and support the team!New to the Redmen TV shop!
