Article by Jack Gill Liverpool travel to Turf Moor on this evening as the Reds look to continue their ‘perfect’ 100% record in the EPL this season. The Reds haven’t lost in the last five fixtures against Burnley, however in August 2016, goals from Andre Gray and Sam Vokes saw the Clarets win 2-0 at Turf Moor which was, to date, the only victory for Burnley in this fixture during the Premier League eraAnyway, with our further ado, our last 5 fixtures against a Dyche side that are never ever an ‘easy fixture.’Liverpool 4-2 Burnley – 10th March 2019We last played Burnley towards the end of last season, with the Reds pushing hard for our first league title of the Premier League era and the Reds didn’t get off to the greatest of starts. Ashley Westwood started the scoring directly from a corner in just the sixth minute to put the underdogs a goal ahead at Anfield. Replays showed that it was harsh on LFC who should have had a free-kick with two players all over Alisson Becker as the corner came in. Nonetheless, Burnley were ahead but Liverpool had time to fix the nightmare start. After the Burnley goal, LFC threatened the Burnley goal several times and thireen minutes later the Reds got the reward for being dominant. Mo Salah played a one-two with Gini Wijnaldum and his low cross led to a mistake after a miscommunication between Tom Heaton and James Tarkowski. Roberto Firmino was there to equalise from close range and the score was now level at 1-1 after the first twenty minutes.10 minutes later, Liverpool went ahead.  A superb challenge by Adam Lallana high up the pitch fell to Salah. The Egyptian was tackled well but the tackle landed straight at the feet of Sadio Mane who bent the ball past Tom Heaton to give the Reds a 2-1 lead. The game remained at 2-1 until the reds managed to strengthen their lead with 23 minutes to go with Roberto Firmino’s second goal of the game. A poor Tom Heaton goal kick fell to the feet of Mo Salah who raced through on goal before being tackled by Charlie Taylor. The ball then fell to Bobby Firmino who made no mistake finishing in the empty net to increase Liverpool’s lead to a two goal margin.Liverpool were pushing for a fourth and nearly got one with ten minutes to go. Trent Alexander-Arnold produced a low cross across the face of goal which Sadio Mane slid onto but managed to hit the bar.As the game went into three minutes of stoppage time at the end of the second half, Burnley managed to pull a goal back and put themselves back in the game. A ‘pinball-esque’ scenario occurred in the Liverpool area which was eventually finished with a first time shot from Gudmundsson who did well to finish under pressure from a tackle by Andy Robertson.Sean Dyche encouraged his men on the touchline that it was possible for them to go on and take two points off LFC, but it was Liverpool who would score again before the final whistle. Jordan Henderson produced a magnificent pass through the Burnley defence which Sadio Mane was able to run onto, around Tom Heaton and stick the ball into the back of the net to confirm a victory for the Reds in an entertaining, six goal thriller.Burnley 1-3 Liverpool – 5th December 2018 Liverpool’s last trip to Turf Moor came early in December 2018 and despite taking the three points, it was a difficult night for the Reds who lost Joe Gomez to injury after a few tasty tackles from the home side.It was a goalless first half in Burnley despite the ball having been in the back of the net when Ashley Barnes volleyed in from a free-kick. Barnes was deemed to be in an offside position by the assistant referee and the goal didn’t stand. When Burnley did actually take the lead nine minutes after the break, it was another contentious decision on a corner that LFC struggled to deal with. It seemed as though the ball was in Alisson’s hands but Ashley Barnes managed to poke it to Jack Cork who finished to put the home side ahead. Liverpool had reason to complain to the referee but the officials waved it away and suggested that Alisson wasn’t in control of the ball.Just eight minutes later the Reds drew level. Divock Origi laid off James Milner who struck it into the bottom corner from twenty yards out.Seven minutes after drawing level, Liverpool went 2-1 up. Virgil Van Dijk slid to square the ball to Firmino after a free-kick from Trent Alexander-Arnold. The Brazilian made no mistake in putting the ball in the back of the net from close range.Liverpool had chances to extend their lead further, but it was Alisson who had to make a superb save to deny a Ben Mee header from hitting the top corner of the net late on. That save was pivotal in LFC going away from Turf Moor with all three points. In the final stages of the game, the Reds launched a blistering counter attack involving Alisson throwing the ball out to Sturridge who flicked the ball to Salah and the Egyptian squared the ball to Xherdan Shaqiri who slotted it past Joe Hart into the back of the net.

Burnley 1-2 Liverpool – 1st January 2018Another trip to Turf Moor came on New Year’s Day 2018 and we were saved by King Klavan. The first half was goalless as Liverpool found it difficult to breakdown a resolute Burnley defence in the first 45 minutes. There were goals in the second half though and it was Liverpool who took the lead after the hour mark, Sadio Mane the scorer. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross deflected into the path of the Senegalese forward who produced a thunderous strike into the top corner on the turn to put the away side in front at Turf Moor.3 minutes from time Burnley got the equalise and it looked like they had stolen two points of LFC. Sam Vokes flicked a cross into the path of Gudmundsson whose diving header beat Simon Mignolet who was scrambling across his goal to keep the header out but was unable to prevent the ball from hitting the back of the net.It wasn’t over yet though and there was more late drama at Turf Moor. Liverpool won the game through a combination of the most unlikely people. A free-kick in the 94th minute was met by a Dejan Lovren header towards the back post where met Ragnar Klavan was and the Estonian headed in from close range to win the game for the Reds.Liverpool 1-1 Burnley – 16th September 2017The only time Liverpool have dropped points in their previous 5 fixtures against Burnley was in a draw at Anfield. Two first half goals in the space of three minutes saw a 1-1 draw in this game. The away side took the lead in the 27th minute through Scott Arfield who hit the ball on the half volley from the edge of the area past Simon Mignolet into the back of the net after a few fortunate bounces went in Burnley’s way.The Anfield crowd weren’t silenced for long though as just three minutes later the reds got the equaliser. Mo Salah the man on the scoresheet for the Reds, finishing well after a long ball forward from Emre Can.Liverpool continued to put pressure on Burnley as we looked for a winner but were unable to take advantage of their dominance and get a winner.Liverpool 2-1 Burnley – 12th March 2017We are going back to the 2016/17 season for this game and the game started with an early goal for the visitors. A Matthew Lowton ball in behind the Liverpool defence was met by a sliding Ashley Barnes who managed to poke the ball past Mignolet to put the visitors in front. It looked as though Burnley were going to go into the break in the lead in their quest to do the double over us for the first time since 1930 but Gini Wijnaldum was to put the Reds back in the game on the stroke of half-time.The next goal of the game would be the winner as Liverpool went ahead in the 61st minute and we got to see a trademark Emre Can knee slide. A powerful effort from 25 yards out by Can hit the bottom corner of the goal. The Reds have only lost one game in the league against Burnley in the Premier League era and will be hoping to continue their 100% record in the Premier League this season with a win at Turf Moor this evening.Up the Reds!Article by Jack Gill
