Liverpool beat Chelsea by two goals to nil away at Stamford Bridge thanks to two goals by Sadio Mane

A Perfect Performance

An overall solid team performance from Liverpool today and Sadio Mane will grab the headlines after scoring two great goals and having a man of the match performance. The whole team looked good on the ball today right from the get-go, the first half could have gone either way at times with both teams having a fair share of the ball and opportunities upfront but Liverpool came out in the second half and completely dominated the entire game.

Besides the penalty incident, Chelsea didn’t really have a sniff in the second half. You would describe today’s performance as perfect as there wasn’t one moment I felt under pressure or uneasy. Total domination from us against a Chelsea side who have so many phenomenal players, especially going forward, and they didn’t look in control at any point.

Alisson deserves a mention, not much to do up until the penalty incident and against a player like Jorginho who has a perfect penalty record and he just held his position for half a second longer than most and went the right way and got the reward. He then had to come up big a few minutes later with a great save from a Timo Werner shot that he not only saved but also got a good enough hand to it to push it away from the opposition.

Fabinho deserves praise as well, dropping in to the centre back role today and he didn’t look out of his depth once. We knew that Chelsea would target him as the weak link in the side but he handled one of the best strikers in Europe with ease.

Sadio Mane

Mane walked out today and thought well Salah got his hat-trick last week so I’m gonna have a go today.

He thoroughly deserved the two goals and the man of the match title today, his first goal was a beautifully worked team goal that he finished off perfectly with a nicely placed header that Kepa had no chance with. His second goal was a great example of sheer determination to hunt down the ball and put the opposition under pressure and he got the reward for it.

Mane is a defenders worst nightmare and he proved that with the red card incident with Christiensen at the end of the first half. Christiensen knows he’s not keeping up with Man for pace and he’s not 100% convinced his keeper can make it either and made the decision to foul rather than have to go toe to toe with him. He’s a handful for the opposition and he will be so pumped up for this season.

Thiago

I’ve seen Thiago play 45 minutes in a Liverpool shirt and I’m already besotted with him. What a player.

He didn’t look out of place in the midfield, he didn’t look like he’d only had one or two training sessions with this team, he just waltzed in and against Chelsea of all teams and just dominated. I was surprised at how much space the Chelsea players gave him and how much time they allowed him on the ball but that’s what we want, we want him to have that time to pick out the type of passes he was playing today.

Besides the penalty incident, he didn’t put a foot wrong and I’m so so so so excited to see him play this season. He also broke a Premier League record for the most passes played in 45 minutes so that’s decent too.

Lincoln Up next

A Carabao Cup trip away to Lincoln awaits on Thursday evening and it will be a very different team to what played today probably.
