After a relatively slow start to the summer transfer window, deals involving Premier League clubs have ratcheted up a notch in the past few days. Declan Rice looks to be going to Arsenal for over £100million. North London rivals Spurs have just signed James Maddison but look set to lose club legend Harry Kane in a big-money move to Bayern Munich.

Staying in Germany, current Bundesliga star Dominik Szoboszlai is the latest player to be linked with a possible transfer to Liverpool. The Athletic’s David Ornstein tweeted today that the Reds were ‘exploring a move’ for the Hungarian. Szoboszlai has a €60million release clause which expires on July 1st. Newcastle United are also believed to be interested in the RB Leipzig midfielder.

On Redmen TV’s Transfer Insight show, we caught up with liverpool.com writer and fellow Hungarian, Bence Bocsák.

DOMINIK SZOBOSZLAI COULD BE LIVERPOOL’S KEVIN DE BRUYNE!

Ben said:

“Years ago I compared him to Steven Gerrard. I do see him as being Gerrard-esque in some ways. He’s someone who can create chances and score goals from long distance. He does have a habit of hitting some worldies like Gerrard did back in the day.

“He’s fast, he runs back, he tracks back, he does all the hard work. In Leipzig you see him doing his offensive work. He’s really good on the ball. I think his dribbling is quite underrated as well when he gets into the right spaces.

“On the right side of the field, as an RCM, I can really see him fitting in well. The prospect of him linking up with Trent and Salah – the creativity in that trio alone from the right side is mouthwatering.

“If Liverpool and Klopp could somehow get that recipe right, then that’s something special… we can start to talk about the league title again if that starts to work. I might be ambitious, but given the qualities of those three players, I think it’s possible.

“He’s got an incredible technique in terms of his shooting, but his passing and creativity as well, he ranks quite highly. He’s among the best in terms of creating chances in the Bundesliga.

“I compared him to De Bruyne before and I think CIES – who do lots of statistics around that – a couple of years ago said he was most similar to Kevin De Bruyne as well. I think he can be Liverpool’s own De Bruyne if he joins. That’s the player I think he’s closest to.

“He feels like he’s open to a new challenge and he’s ready for a new challenge… that’s why his agent is having meetings with the likes of Liverpool and the likes of Newcastle.

“Newcastle are the only other club interested in him that we know of. It seems like Liverpool have a pretty clear route. I know Newcastle are in the Champions League and Liverpool are in the Europa League, but given Klopp’s appeal… Szoboszlai is someone who has previously praised Klopp.

“The word we’re getting out of both clubs is neither of them are willing to pay that release clause, which I think is to Liverpool’s advantage.

“Fabio Carvalho is going to be his replacement. They’ve already got Baumgartner in there, another attacking midfielder. They’ve retained Dani Olmo, so it feels like they’re already preparing to sell him.”

Redmen Reacts
Szoboszlai has been mentioned as a possible Liverpool target before, but the Ornstein story is definitely the most concrete link so far. Hopefully, Jörg Schmadtke will already be deep in talks with Leipzig, given that the two clubs have a good relationship when it comes to player sales. Bence’s summary of Szoboszlai is one to get excited about – the club desperately need an upgrade on the committed but often ineffective Jordan Henderson in attacking right-sided areas.

Comparisons to Kevin De Bruyne and Steven Gerrard are sure to get the pulse racing for many Reds fans. It has been a long time since ‘…GERRARD!’ was the go-to shout for schoolchildren belting the ball across the playground. It may be a little trickier for ‘SZOBOSZLAI!’ to catch on in that regard, but the Reds have looked short of a threat from outside the box for several seasons. Having such a renowned long-distance shooter in the squad may encourage defenders to rush out of their positions, leaving space for the likes of Mo Salah to exploit. Liverpool do not tend to get involved in drawn-out transfer sagas – fingers crossed that a deal can be struck in the next few days.
