Written by: Daniel Ghorbal @GhorbalDanWith the international break reaching a swift conclusion, the League leaders are back in action, travelling to Selhurst Park this Saturday to take on former Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace. Liverpool’s hosts are on a poor run of form but have still made a fairly solid start to the season, sitting nicely in 7th position in the League table.Despite this, Palace’s home form still remains indifferent, a similar theme re-occurring from last season whereby only the top 6 had a better record than Palace. Typically setting up to play on the counter-attack away from home, the Eagles flourish playing a deep block and have a solid defensive structure. However, at home there is more emphasis on attacking and entertaining the fans, but scoring goals freely is not Palace’s trademark and they have struggled at Selhurst Park, not scoring enough in front of the Holmesdale faithful. In credit to Palace, many wrote them off after failing to sign a centre-forward and replacement right-back for Aaron Wan-Bissaka but they have been as impressive as usual, with Jordan Ayew and Joel Ward filling those voids admirably. Liverpool’s visit will offer a stern challenge, but with Andy Robertson potentially out through a knee injury, Wilfred Zaha may target James Milner (if he starts) as a potential avenue to goal.In my opinion, one of the signings of the summer must be Gary Cahill’s free transfer to Palace from Chelsea. Although written off for being “too old”, his experience and solidity has shone through this season, helping Palace to important clean sheets against Everton, Norwich etc. Cahill’s organisational skills at the heart of defence are really underrated, with him and James Tomkins proving that pace and skill are not the only traits that make you a top-class defender. Their intelligence and composure at the back has been phenomenal and I have no doubt’s it’ll be difficult for Liverpool to break down that defence come Saturday.

Conversely, a few of Palace’s attacking starlets have failed to positively contribute this season, with Wilfred Zaha, Christian Benteke and Max Meyer just a few of their players yet to score this season. In tight games against good sides, solitary goals are often enough to win games but at stages this season, Palace have had a lack of potency in the final third that needs addressing in January. Jordan Ayew has 4 goals to his name which isn’t bad at this stage, but those around him need to deliver before they begin slipping down the table. This is a test for Liverpool, travelling to a ground that historically is raucous for games of this calibre, but if we just play our game then Palace will struggle to get out and be forced back by this brilliant Liverpool side. Prediction: Palace 0-2 Liverpool.Written by: Daniel Ghorbal @GhorbalDan
