Liverpool have certainly lifted the mood amongst the fanbase as the midfield rebuild went up a notch with the out-of-the-blue capture of Dominik Szoboszlai last week.
Seemingly not even on the radar, no sooner was David Ornstein linking the 22-year-old Hungarian with a possible move to Anfield than was he strutting his stuff around the hallowed turf to announce his arrival on Sunday.
Two far more regularly linked names have since returned to the lips of Reds in the shape of Khephren Thuram and Romeo Lavia and for the latest episode of our Journo Insight show, we asked experienced LFC journalist Neil Jones whether we could expect both to land on Merseyside.
‘HE’S GOING TO BE FANTASTIC’ – Ex-Liverpool Goalkeeper On Dominik Szoboszlai
Neil said:
“Let’s not get carried away in the idea that all Liverpool’s midfielders need to go in the bin. There are still some that can play and will play.
“So I wouldn’t expect it to be both definitely not. The work that goes on is sort of, obviously in the background. It’s the ‘is there a deal to be done?’
“‘What’s the player like?’ ‘His character?’ ‘Does he fancy it?’ ‘What are his wages going to be like?’ That’s natural – Liverpool will know that for a lot of players that they’re not going to sign.
“They will have an idea of the situation. I’d be amazed if they signed both Lavia and Thuram.”
Redmen Reacts
Whilst the massive midfield overall remains incomplete, adding two more faces to the mix without a senior option heading out the door does seem overboard.
As things stand, Jurgen Klopp currently has Thiago, Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones, Stefan Bajcetic and the two new arrivals at his disposal. Plus the likes of Tyler Morton and Bobby Clark should he see fit.
Furthermore, with the Reds also reportedly looking in the market for a central defender, there is little wiggle room in the squad when it comes to homegrown quotas and thus, Lavia alone could have to be the choice over Thuram to allow Jorg Schmadtke to freely scour Europe in search for defensive reinforcements.
