Liverpool continued their excellent late-season form on Monday night, with a commanding 3-0 victory away to Leicester City. Man-of-the-moment Curtis Jones scored two superb goals, with the resurgent Trent Alexander-Arnold adding a screamer from distance in the second half.
The Reds confirmed this week that – as expected – three of their current midfielders will leave the club on a free transfer at the end of the season. Brighton’s Alexis Mac Allister has emerged as one of the players most strongly linked as a replacement for the outgoing Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Goal.com’s Neil Jones has written a piece about the Argentinian and his teammate Moisés Caicedo. He also dismissed suggestions that a lack of Champions League football could derail a potential Mac Allister move to Anfield.
On the latest episode of our Journo Insight Show, Neil spoke about his piece and the Mac Allister links.
“Yeah he is!” Neil Jones Confirms Alexis Mac Allister is Keen to Join Liverpool
He said: “Liverpool would not be having him on their list of targets if Alexis Mac Allister only wanted to join a Champions League club. They would not do it. They would actually withdraw from the race themselves if that was the case. That’s the way they operate.
“What is he going to cost? There was a story about £70million. I spoke to people at Liverpool, [they] were like, ‘That’s not really a figure that has been ironed out’.
“It’s going to be difficult to get anyone out of Brighton. I think if you’re talking £100million… I don’t think Liverpool are there. What can you get him for? Is it closer to £60/65million? I think Liverpool would be there. I think there are going to be developments on that in the next few weeks, definitely.
“By the end of this month, I think we’ll be in a pretty clear position of where he’s going and how close Liverpool are to getting this deal done. I think he is a player that’s right at the top of Liverpool’s list now.
“He can go and play for this team, never mind in terms of his ability, but in terms of his character as well. He would enhance your squad and your personality within the squad. There are a lot of positives around Mac Allister as a player, as a person, and as a potential signing.”

REDMEN REACTS
In the past 12 months, Mac Allister – hailed as ‘very talented’ by former Anfield midfield ace Paul Ince – has made the transition from good domestic midfielder to World Cup winner and Premier League star. He would be difficult to prize away from the south coast, but the lure of a move to one of the game’s giants may make him force Brighton’s hand. The Argentinian has few weaknesses, improving his national side immediately after their shock defeat to Saudi Arabia last November. A positive character reference from ex-Klopp lieutenant Adam Lallana will do his chances of a move no harm. Comparisons can be drawn between the two players – both are comfortable on the ball and offer an attacking threat, but will also give their all for the team when pressing. Like Lallana, Mac Allister is not a huge man, but as the son of a former Argentian international left-back, he will have been raised knowing how to look after himself on the pitch. With only ten days until the end of the season, hopefully, before long we will know if ‘Ally Mac’ is going to be a big part of a new-look Liverpool midfield.
