“PSR is business first and football second” – Kieran Maguire gives his take on the Premier League Finance Field.

With the infamous points deductions, City’s 115 rule breaks and multi-club ownership model, football journalist and finance expert Kieran Maguire, sits down with our very own Dan Clubbe to give his insight on what has been a very busy season.

“I think you could argue the rules have not moved with the times” started Maguire, “There’s an awful lot of very unhappy people – half of the people of Liverpool are very annoyed at what seems like a very unfair set of rules.”

The 10-point deduction of Everton came in November of last year, when they were said to exceed permitted losses by £19.5 million during the 21-22 season. The deduction was further decreased to 6 points, but still a slap in the face to Sean Dyches’s side, as the blue side of Manchester currently sits 2nd in the league.

“The explanations at times have been poor, everybody was taken aback by Everton’s initial 10 point deduction, but that set a standard for a distrust in the people making and applying the decisions, that should not be good in any industry let alone football. The whole situation is just not a good look.”

Back on home turf, there have been reports that FSG are looking at the multi-club model and adding a club under their portfolio.

“There are benefits for FSG” explains Maguire, “You only need one HR, legal and marketing department, across the whole of the multi-club ownership model. There are financial benefits as well as football benefits.”

“You could have players at Liverpool who you want to send out on loan, but in an ideal world, you want them to be learning the Liverpool way elsewhere. Having Multiple clubs under their belt and having continuity across all of the clubs in terms of diet, philosophy, and pre-match training, means that those players become LFC-ready when they return back from the loan, which wouldn’t necessarily be the case if you’d sent them out on loan to clubs who are decent clubs with decent managers.”

Maguire also discusses the disadvantages of this model, which have been pointed out by Reds across the globe.

“You’ve got to say there are some cases of which club is the senior club in this because USG played in Europe more times than Brighton, so should therefore the focus be on USG. There are certainly complications with the fan culture of it all.”

Kieran Maguire is a specialist in Football finance and hosts the podcast ‘The Price Of Football’ with comedian Kevin Day.
