Liverpool are enjoying a season back in and amongst the title race on the back of a difficult year whilst the women’s team are also improving having stayed in the WSL following their promotion back to the top flight last season.
Jurgen Klopp’s and Matt Beard’s charges can be hopeful of a successful campaign from hereon out and with the help of a host of key players it remains distinctly possible that both sides could be fighting come the business end of their respective campaigns.
Former Reds defender Becky Easton and Anfield captains Phil Thompson and John Barnes all know a thing or two about what it takes to succeed on Merseyside.
Liverpool Away End React To Virgil Van Dijk’s Goal Against Sheffield United
Speaking at the launch of the incredible LFC Memories app with House of Memories in collaboration with the LFC Foundation, Forever Reds and Red Archive here’s what Thompson had to say about the current situation…
On the title aspirations, ex-Liverpool skipper and assistant manager Thompson said: “At the moment you can look at us and the midfield, all the talk about how could we miss out on certain players – we’re not doing bad. Mac Allister is settling in, Szoboszlai is certainly settling in, and Endo is doing exceptionally well so the midfield is functioning. We’ve got Curtis who started the season brilliantly, Harvey, I think there’s a lot more to come from this Liverpool team.
“We went seven or eight games very much under the radar at the start of the season and all of a sudden people say ‘Oh, this is happening’. We work at it and we get results, we’re going back to when we won the title, this team finds a way to get a result and I think that is the greatest thing.
“So yeah, once we get through the busy December period and we’re still in with a shout I think we’ve got a great chance.”
On Virgil van Dijk’s resurgence, Thommo – himself a former central defender – said: “He’s back to his best and it’s taken a while but he had a dreadful injury. It’s not just getting your fitness back it’s getting your confidence back to do what you’ve done before.
“I think he’s embraced the armband, it’s made him even more. He’s back to his vocal best, vocally now, telling people what to do and where to go, you’re seeing that old Virgil has come back. Some of his performances, even at Sheffield United, he’s there, the blocks are there, the headers are there, the goal was there. You see him in that box, he wants it again!”

Redmen Reacts
There is no doubt that Van Dijk has returned to his imperious best this season, perhaps aided by a combination of time since his injury and the added responsibility of wearing the armband for The Reds.
Either way, a Rolls Royce-esque Virg, added to Mohamed Salah and the attacking lads, Alisson Becker as well as the midfield strength in depth, it’s little surprise that Liverpool fans are starting to dream about what is possible again this season.
