Liverpool started their quest for a trophy-laden finale to Jurgen Klopp’s time on Merseyside in style on Sunday with a Carabao Cup win over regular domestic final rivals Chelsea.
A mixture of youthful exuberance and experienced class saw the Reds over the line, perhaps a sneak peek into the future as the Anfield hierarchy began to prepare for life after the German boss.
One name remains more prominent than the rest when it comes to taking the Anfield hot seat, Xabi Alonso. The former Liverpool midfielder is currently leading the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen and is reportedly the number one option for FSG.
Dan spoke to Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri after he provided a recent update on X…
Sacha Tavolieri Exclusive: “Liverpool have made an approach for Xabi Alonso!”
Sacha said:
“Talks are ongoing. Liverpool are ready to find a financial solution with Leverkusen to please them and to please every party.
“The fact is that Leverkusen will not let their trainer leave for free, it will be a transfer fee, a transfer price that Liverpool will pay. But the fact is that for the moment they didn’t go into salary perspective and so on. There is no draft that has been sent to the agent.
“All they say is ‘we want him’ and we want to be sure that he’s involved and also we want to let him know what will be the structure and what we are going to do next season with the Sporting Director, with the executive director and so on. So they really want to involve him in the future of the team before they speak about money.”
THE PROS AND CONS OF XABI ALONSO FOR LIVERPOOL
Redmen Reacts
Whilst the ongoing matters on the pitch remain the priority for Liverpool fans, it’s almost impossible not to have at least one eye on who will be given the thankless task of succeeding Klopp.
Alonso is currently on course to dethrone Bayern Munich – something only Klopp himself has managed in Germany in recent times – and looks primed to be among the next crop of elite coaches and with it possibly the perfect man to take the Reds forward.
With reports of a return for Michael Edwards in an executive role, a new Sporting Director still to be appointed and of course, contract matters to be sorted, it’s imperative the club get its ducks in a row as soon as possible.
