In an insightful conversation, former Liverpool midfielder Jan Molby discussed Liverpool’s current trajectory under new manager Arne Slot, reflecting on the club’s recent progress and sharing insights from his own career.

Molby highlighted how Slot has brought continuity to the club, building upon the success established by Jurgen Klopp.

“Arne has been brought in to continue the good work that Klopp has left, and he has done exactly that.” According to Molby, Slot’s approach has maintained Liverpool’s competitive edge as they enter a crucial phase in the season.

When asked if Liverpool are better prepared for high-stakes matches under Slot, Molby answered “it is a difficult question to answer. Yes the Reds are more measured, but the strength under Jurgen was the ability to get the opposition out of their comfort zone.”

Molby emphasised that Klopp’s tactics often involved creating “intensity and chaos on the pitch”, particularly against the likes of Manchester City, but he also expressed his enthusiasm for Liverpool’s new “in control” style under Slot.

Next discussed was the role of Alexis Mac Allister who Molby praised for his skill saying, “the certainty is that Mac Allister is a world-class player in the way that he plays and controls games.”

He also added a point on Mac Allister’s strong pressing ability, but stated that his next challenge would be to “contribute more in terms of goals and assists.”

Ryan Gravenberch’s standout performances have also impressed Molby, who observed that Liverpool had been actively searching for a reliable “number 6” for the past few transfer windows.

“The number 6 has become so important in modern football.” Reflecting on Liverpool’s bid for Moises Caicedo, he added, “If the club spent the £110 million on Caicedo, he would not fit under the style of play of Arne Slot, so Liverpool got a bit of luck there!”

The talk turned to reminiscence as Molby discussed his memories of his transfer from Ajax to Liverpool, revealing at the time that “Ajax was the club to sell you, so the move wasn’t unexpected.”

“I thought that I was destined to go to Sheffield Wednesday, but Liverpool offered me a ten-day trial instead!”

In reflecting on the changing motivations of the players today, he commented, “in the modern day, players want to play in the Champions League; in my day it was tournaments because that’s where the best football was.”

Molby was managed under none other than Kenny Daglish and expressed his gratitude for his support noting that “the manager gave me a chance and believed in me.”

Lastly, we discussed the Red’s league-winning campaign in 1985-86 which was labelled as “the greatest time for a footballer.”

He explained, “When you know you’re in favour of playing, it’s terrific!” Despite the success, celebrations remained relatively modest by today’s standards.“On league celebrations, it wasn’t extravagant. We had a few beers and went to a nightclub!”

Molby’s reflections offered a glimpse into the evolution of Liverpool FC and the continuous development of the players.

There can be little doubt that whilst Slot himself has been at pains to stress how strong a squad he inherited, the work done by the Dutch coach and his staff on the training pitch is paying dividends on the actual pitch right now.

Top of both the Premier League and Champions League at the latest international staging point, Liverpool could well be about to emulate some of the success Molby himself enjoyed as a Red.
