Liverpool’s number nine – the man we hail as ‘the best in the world’ – Roberto Firmino will leave the club at the end of his contract this summer.

Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg broke the news on Friday afternoon on Twitter and Reds everywhere reacted with expected sadness as a man who has typified the Jurgen Klopp era decided to leave Merseyside for pastures new.

Following reports suggesting Firmino may stay at Anfield, the announcement came as somewhat of a shock and we spoke to the man who broke the news for the finer details.

Speaking exclusively to us here at The Redmen TV on our latest episode of Expert Insight, Plettenberg (@Plettigoal) said:

“Jurgen Klopp was very very motivated to extend his (Firmino’s) contract. He was pushing until the end. He has often said it to the media but he also told it to Firmino personally. Klopp wanted him to stay!”

There is no sugarcoating it, this is a sickener for us Reds.

Firmino has been so pivotal to our success under Klopp – who described the 31-year-old as ‘unique’ – coming up with his own significant moments whilst also allowing those around him to thrive so wonderfully – the true epitome and a facilitator whilst also leaving room for his own sprinkling of genius.

Albeit the replacements may already be in the building, Liverpool will lose a true modern-day legend when Firmino kicks his last ball, plays his final no-look pass and gives the Kop one last beaming smile.
