“Firmly Dismissed” – Neil Jones On Liverpool ‘Stance’ Regarding ‘Miracle Worker’

It was another frustrating trip to Old Trafford for Liverpool last Sunday, as the Reds failed to capitalise on their first-half dominance, eventually drawing the game 2-2. Jürgen Klopp’s side are now second in the Premier League table, behind Arsenal on goal difference.

With the race for the title now approaching the final few games, the search to find Klopp’s replacement took another turn yesterday, with Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg reporting there is a ‘verbal agreement in principle’ for Sporting CP’s Rúben Amorim to take the top job at Anfield.

Closer to home, The Athletic’s James Pearce reiterated the club’s stance that Amorim has not been offered the job and that there are still a ‘number of viable candidates’ for the role.

On the latest episode of our Journo Insight show, experienced LFC journalist Neil Jones reacted to the Amorim developments.

Neil said:

“I wouldn’t even say ever so slightly – [LFC] quite firmly dismissed the idea that anything’s been agreed with anyone and even the idea that a front runner or a preferred candidate has even been identified at this stage.

“Whether you believe that or not, that’s up to you, but that’s the Liverpool stance on it.

“The one thing about the Amorim stuff at the moment – there doesn’t seem to be any suggestion of an alternative at this stage.

“There are others that have been fleetingly mentioned, but very few that you’ve thought, ‘Ah yeah ok, that might be a possibility.’ You’ve got on the agenda: ‘All roads lead to Amorim.’ I think that’s fair.

“Liverpool, as I say, are denying the idea that anything’s close, anything’s agreed, and even that he is the guy that they’ve identified, as far as their briefing is concerned.

“When Jürgen announced what he announced in January, I would’ve expected by the end of the season you would have a firm idea of who Liverpool’s next manager is going to be. That might well be the case – there are still six weeks to go.

“Obviously as fans, and as journalists, and as pundits and as observers. We want some clarity, don’t we, about Liverpool? We want to know who the manager is going to be.

“I’m not sure I will get my wish that it’s all confirmed by the end of the season.

“Whoever it would be now – if it wasn’t Amorim – it would feel like a bit of a ‘whoa’, a bit of an about turn.”

Redmen Reacts

Sporting’s Rúben Amorim has been the bookmaker’s favourite to land the top job at Liverpool since Xabi Alonso announced that he would be staying at Bayer Leverkusen for at least another season. There are two ways to look at yesterday’s developments – if Florian Plettenberg is right and an agreement has been struck, perhaps the club are issuing statements through UK-based LFC correspondents as a courtesy to Sporting, who are currently fighting hard to land a league and cup double. The alternative view is that the rebuttal issued by the likes of James Pearce should be taken at face value as Amorim is one of a number of candidates under consideration. Incoming FSG head of football Michael Edwards does not officially start in his new role until June 1st, so perhaps the announcement of the club’s new manager will have to wait until then. One of the potential options in Julian Nagelsmann will be leading his country at this summer’s Euros, so may be waiting until the end of that tournament to decide his future. Another outside bet is Inter’s Simone Inzaghi, who looks set to win Serie A and may be ready for a new challenge.
