As well as a whole new set of midfielders and beyond, Liverpool are also on the lookout for a new Sporting Director this summer after Julian Ward announced he would leave the position early.
According to a report from Get French Football News, one name in the running for the Reds’ role is current Monaco transfer chief Paul Mitchell – who himself will leave his current post this summer.
Dan spoke with the senior editor at the publication to get the details of the talks so far and the job the Englishman has done during his time in France…
PAUL MITCHELL – LIVERPOOL’S POTENTIAL NEW SPORTING DIRECTOR
Luke said: “He’s probably adaptable but at the same time the roles he has been picked for are roles where you are looking for cheap buys.
“When you think of Tottenham under Pochettino it was finding those players that other teams weren’t necessarily looking at and then they’d come there and they’d shine. The same at Red Bull, a lot of the Red Bull system is predicated on unearthing these talents, developing them and selling them on. It’s the same in Monaco.
“In terms of having a huge budget at his disposal and bringing in ready-made players, he’s not necessarily ever had that role.
“You can only work with what you’ve had at your disposal and from the evidence that we’ve seen at Monaco we can say he’s a specialist at unearthing talents.”
Redmen Reacts
Getting this appointment right is almost as pivotal to bringing success back to Anfield as any signing that can be made this summer.
With the future of Jurgen Klopp already secured, Liverpool know that they are only ever a handful of smart decisions away from regaining their poise and challenging again.
Albeit far from a closed race, appointing someone with the track record of Mitchell would certainly fit into the category of ‘smart’ from the hierarchy.
