Liverpool’s disastrous season has continued with a 4-1 humbling away to Manchester City and a disjointed 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge. The Reds are now ten points off fourth place and look unlikely to be competing in next season’s Champions League.

Jürgen Klopp has said the club are exploring the transfer market ahead of next season, with reinforcements desperately needed in midfield. Chelsea’s Mason Mount has been repeatedly linked with a move to Anfield in recent months. Local journalist Neil Jones described the England international as a ‘perfect signing’ in his piece for goal.com this week.

On the latest episode of our Journo Insight Show, we asked Neil for the latest on the Mount pursuit.

Neil Jones Confirms Liverpool “Talks” Over Mason Mount!

Neil said:

“He’s appointed a new agent, which is usually a precursor to he wants the agent to do something, i.e. a new contract or a transfer. He’s about to enter the final year of his contract at Chelsea – there’s no real progress been made on an extension, so he’s given thought to his next move.

“They’re not going to be playing in the Champions League, so they are going to be in a position where they are going to have to do some book-balancing. They’ll be looking to offload, which means there’s a strong possibility that Mount will leave the club in the summer.

“I think Premier League clubs are getting their head around the fact that the way the financial world is in football, we will have to start dealing with our rival clubs. If you want to get rid of a player, the chances are you’re going to have to sell him to a Premier League club or a select few European clubs.

“If there’s an opportunity to sign him, I think Liverpool will be pretty much at the front of the queue, or close to it.

“He walks into Liverpool’s midfield – hopefully he runs into Liverpool’s midfield! The last thing we need is someone walking into that midfield!”

REDMEN REACTS

Despite some initial scepticism about the signing from some quarters, most observers would now accept any introduction of ‘legs’ in the Liverpool midfield as priority number one, and Mason Mount certainly fits the bill on that front. Todd Boehly’s strategy in running Chelsea is looking increasingly scattershot. Any team with over 30 players in competition for a place in the side and Frank Lampard drafted in until the end of the season is not being efficiently run – LFC’s transfer committee can take advantage of this upheaval and negotiate a much lower price than the £70million initially quoted for Mount. The 24-year-old was recently described as ‘superb’ by Kylian Mbappe and played a starring role in Chelsea’s victorious 2020/21 Champions League campaign. Hopefully, he can perform similarly well on the big stage in a red shirt.
