With Giorgi Mamardashvili set to join Liverpool next summer, we spoke with Valencia-based journalist Nacho Sanchis for another Expert Insight.
As Valencia fans are anticipating the goalkeeper’s departure, most are concerned about the financial aspect, with Sanchis noting “People wanted more money because he has the potential to be one of the best keepers in the world.”
Despite this, his decision to remain at Valencia has been met with the utmost appreciation. “It’s amazing and people didn’t expect it” speaks volumes about Giorgi’s character and his public communication expressing a desire to stay has endeared him further to supporters.
It is no secret that Mamardashvili had opportunities to learn elsewhere such as through a potential loan to Bournemouth. However, he chose to stay with Valencia despite lower pay, showing his gratitude to the fans and the city.
Regarding his future, Mamardashvili has remained tight-lipped. According to Sanchis, “the club is keeping the players in the ‘locker room’. Valencia’s players don’t tend to speak out about this, but everything is clear.”
However, “This year is an exam for Giorgi to prove that he can be Liverpool’s number one goalkeeper next year”. Despite the 25/26 season move, the Reds have been monitoring him closely, with representatives visiting him twice to observe his performances.
On his development and training, Sanchis stated “Giorgi is improving with two of his weaknesses; playing with his feet, especially long kicks and handling corners, where he used to hesitate.”
Mohamed Salah is THE BEST IN THE WORLD.
The goalkeeper’s commitment to improvement extends beyond the field as “he trains with top coaches and loves to work”. His reputation for dedication suggests that he is preparing himself for work in the Premier League.
In the face of Valencia’s struggles in La Liga, Mamardashvili has been a stand-out performer. “Valencia are at the bottom of the table but have three clean sheets in eleven matches, which is special and proves that Giorgi has a gift for that level.”
Sanchis also highlighted his mental resilience and loyalty, “when he played in the King’s Cup in 2022, he made great saves but didn’t save any in the penalty shootout. When I spoke to his people, I got told that he was very mad with himself and felt like he owed the people as he is very loyal.”
“If Valencia gets relegated, Mamadashvili will leave Liverpool sad. He is very committed to this team and thankful to the city.” This sense of duty and gratitude has shaped his character, making him a fan favourite.

Giorgi is “fully focused and a great character”; this level-headed approach combined with his impressive physical and technical abilities, could see Giorgi emerge as one of Liverpool’s stand-out goalkeepers in the near future.

Whilst both Alisson and Kelleher continue to uphold the highest possible standards whoever is called upon, there remains uncertainty surrounding the future of the Irishman in particular and as such, futureproofing the goalkeeper department with the capture of Mamardashivili looks to be a shrewd move from The Reds.
