One of the standout ties of the World Cup group stages before a ball was kicked was Ghana vs. Uruguay. Liverpool legend Luis Suárez proved he has not lost his ability to spice up a match by refusing to apologise for his 2010 handball against the West-African side.
One of Ghana’s standout players of the tournament has been Ajax’s Mohammed Kudus. The 22-year-old has been linked with a possible move to Liverpool in the Dutch media, hot off the back of a superb goal in his side’s 2-1 defeat at Anfield in September.
On the latest episode of our Journo Insight show, we spoke to goal.com’s Neil Jones and asked him for his take on the Kudus rumours.
Neil said:
“He’s a good player, and he did take that goal at Anfield beautifully in front of the Kop. He was good in the game as well, I would say. A little bit like Nunez, where actually it was his performance, wasn’t it? It wasn’t just the fact that he scored, it was his performance. I think the same with Minamino actually. He’s young – 22. Obviously got a bit of confidence, he caused a bit of a stir with an interview he gave where he compared himself to Neymar, that went around the world a little bit. I think he wanted to join Everton and I think he almost went on strike to push through it. It didn’t work.
Type of player – left footer, plays number nine, plays number ten, plays off the right. That doesn’t strike me as somewhere that’s a problem position for Liverpool. You think of Elliott and you think of Carvalho and Salah and Jota – there’s a lot of a lot of competition in that area, but he is an interesting player. He’s got a good profile.”
REDMEN REACTS
Liverpool could be in need of attacking reinforcements if Roberto Firmino is not offered a contract extension and leaves at the end of the season. Kudus has taken to the Champions League like a duck to water – he scored stunning goals against both Liverpool and Rangers, finishing the group stage with four goals from six games. The Ghanian star is known for his pacy, incisive running and explosive finishing, so would not be a direct replacement for Firmino. His signature would make sense if Jürgen Klopp decides to start Darwin Núñez exclusively through the middle next season, with Kudus competing for wide positions with the likes of Mo Salah, Fabio Carvalho and Diogo Jota. Ajax managed to squeeze over £80 million out of Manchester United for Anthony, so the deal may prove an expensive one for Julian Ward’s eventual
