Starting XI: How should Liverpool line up against FC Porto?

@AdamMNVi

An emphatic win against Arsenal eases the Reds nicely into a midweek Champions League clash with FC Porto. But while this would normally be a game with something on the line, Liverpool fans can sit back and enjoy the ninety minutes after Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid were banished from Anfield as Klopp claimed the Group B crown.

Liverpool have been unstoppable in Europe, in what was supposed to be a treacherous group. We’ve left the others to fight amongst themselves for a place in the knockouts, giving us the opportunity to award some much-needed minutes to players on the fringe while playing some starters into sharpness.

Here’s how we should line up:

Caoimhin Kelleher starts in goal behind a back four with some changes. Nat Phillips’ influence was paramount in getting us in the Champions League last season, and he should play out the rest of the group games at the heart of the defence. Ibrahima Konate starts alongside him with Neco Williams and Kostas Tsimikas on either side of them.

Fabinho anchors the six after an excellent performance against the Gunners in a midfield that features one change. Thiago’s recent return from injury means it’s not worth risking him with two starts in quick succession; Henderson starts while Oxlade-Chamberlain continues his run in the side.

Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi return to the side after some positive scoring form in their recent appearances, with support from Mane on the flank. Klopp has five substitutions in this one, allowing Sadio to be withdrawn around the hour mark while Thiago should be given some minutes towards the end too.

Porto have some good players at their disposal but don’t seem to enjoy coming up against Liverpool’s system, though a changed XI should make for a more entertaining game that the Reds should edge.

Score prediction: Liverpool 3 – 1 FC Porto
