According to reports, Liverpool are incredibly close to adding World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allistar to their ranks for next season. Many journalists, including the world-renowned Fabrizio Romano, have reported that the Argentine has agreed personal terms with the Merseyside club.
Our host of the Transfer Insight show Dan Clubbe was joined by Argentinian football expert Roy Nemer (@RoyNemer) to get the lowdown on the potentially soon-to-be Liverpool midfielder.
Nemer is a self-confessed super-fan of the Argentina national team, he even owns his own South American news website, Mundo Abiceleste.
It looks to be a matter of when not if now, in terms of Mac Allistar, and if you’re a regular follower of The Redmen TV you’ll have seen the previous piece on Mac Allistar’s play style a couple of weeks ago. Essentially, he’s a versatile midfielder who can shine in both number 10 roles, and deeper lying playmaker roles as the 8.
LIVERPOOL ARE CLOSE TO FULL AGREEMENT WITH ALEXIS MAC ALLISTER! | Liverpool News Update
The Argentina aficionado told us at Redmen an interesting story about the midfielder’s turbulent international career.
“First of all, he was capped in 2019, he played two matches, and didn’t really stand out and he wasn’t called up for another three years. He was in good form, but I believe the main reason he was called up in 2022 is because of an issue with the South American Premier League players being unable to travel back due to COVID restrictions, this gave Mac Allister an opportunity to get back into the first team ahead of the World Cup.
“Again in those two games he didn’t stand out, he was an unused substitute in The Finalissima. So, when the World Cup rolls around and Argentina play Saudi Arabia on matchday one he isn’t playing. Then he plays against Mexico, scores against Poland and that was it, the rest is history.”
Nemer went on to commend the midfield maestro’s attributes and even compared him to his fellow countryman Lionel Messi
“He’s a very intelligent player, very very smart, knows how to dribble, knows how to play that killer pass. He’s got a pretty good eye for goal as well, he wears pressure very well.
“There were times when he [Mac Allistar] was on the ball and for a split second I honestly thought it was Messi. The manoeuvring, the movement, even the look with the beard, from afar I would think it was Leo.”
Redmen Reacts
The sooner this one is over the line the better, Mac Allister is an absolute gem of a midfielder, and confirming his signature really does set the tone for the summer. There’s already a lot of noise going on in the background regarding the hiring of Jorg Schmadtke so it’s vital the Reds get this one over the line without any hiccups. The 24-year-old has proven he can do it in the Premier League and he has proven he can do it on the biggest stage of them all, the World Cup stage. I expect this will be the first of three new midfield acquisitions, and what a summer it could be.
