Ahead of Liverpool’s 2-1 FA Cup 5th Round victory over Norwich City, Jurgen Klopp appeared to do a slight climb-down on the idea that he would leave the club after his current contract expires in 2024.

Last season had several low moments off the field, including the sad losses of Klopp’s mother and Alisson’s father, punctuating what was a tough time for all due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thankfully, the boss has appeared back to his old self recently, performing a record amount of fist pumps following the 6-0 thrashing of Leeds United, then getting his hands on some silverware in the form of the Carabao Cup.

On the latest episode of our Journo Insight Show, we asked Goal.com’s Liverpool correspondent Neil Jones for his thoughts on the likelihood of Jurgen extending his stay at Anfield.

Neil said:

“He spoke before the Carabao Cup Final about how much he was sick of football last May. We knew that, I knew that, I felt sorry for him. I felt sorry for a lot of Liverpool people last season because they were living under all the same pressures, all the same expectations, with none of the rewards for it.

Maybe this season has re-energised a little bit of him and he has realised, ‘I can’t do without this, I don’t want to be without this.’ I don’t think you can underestimate the power of having supporters. I think the passion and the warmth that the players feel is unarguable.

He’s not saying too much, but it’s the softening of a stance, it’s him avoiding the chance to absolutely shoot it in the back of the head and say ‘Sorry, I’m off.’ Look at the rivals – is Guardiola going to leave Manchester City? Possibly. Who are United going to get in? Imagine United were reborn as a force? I would back Jurgen to say, ‘Let’s have it!’”

Redmen Reacts

Jurgen has already been in charge of more Liverpool games than either of his two previous clubs, so if he were to leave at the end of the 23/24 season, he will already have given the fans memories that will last a lifetime.

The problem is that as fans we are naturally greedy and hungry for more of these amazing experiences!

Pep Guardiola has pushed beyond his previous tenures as Manchester City manager, so why not Jurgen?

Liverpool look equipped to succeed and the days of playing behind closed doors seem to be over, so hopefully Klopp will realise you are long time retired and will sign up for at least a few extra years. I’m sure we would all like to see Jurgen carry on those fist pumps well into his 60s!
