Along with an abundance of players for a much-needed squad overhaul, Liverpool are also in the market for a new Sporting Director this summer as Julian Ward – the successor to Michael Edwards’ throne – is set to leave the role at Anfield.
Albeit perhaps a less glamourous pursuit than the one for Jude Bellingham, those in power on Merseyside are seemingly working away behind the scenes to ensure that the right man takes over the reins to work alongside Jurgen Klopp moving forwards.
One name linked with the task of rebuilding the Reds from the role has been Monaco chief Paul Mitchell, formerly of MK Dons, Southampton, Tottenham and Red Bull group fame, the Englishman has developed an impressive résumé following on from a playing career cut short through injury.
According to an exclusive report from Get French Football News, Liverpool have taken their interest in Mitchell one step further and ‘held talks’ with the 41-year-old, perhaps to sound out his suitability for the soon-to-be vacant position.
THE TIRESOME BELLINGHAM SAGA CONTINUES | Redmen Originals Liverpool Podcast
We spoke to the writer and senior editor at the publication, Luke Entwistle to get more details on the links and to find out more about the transfer guru…
Luke said: “You hear certain things and what is certain is that there were talks. Those talks were quite preliminary. But ultimately a club like Liverpool, having a good recruitment process for this role will understandably have a shortlist of potential candidates.
“It’s clear that given the fact that they’ve wanted to approach Paul Mitchell, it’s clear that he’s on that shortlist. They probably wanted to know availability and given the report that came out of L’Equipe a month ago highlights that he will be on the market. That is something that probably interests Liverpool because you’re not having to buy a sporting director out of a role.”

Given the transfer business Mitchell has overseen and the list of success stories already acredited to his name in a short career, it’s no surprise that Liverpool would indeed want to explore the possibility of bringing the former Wigan Athletic defender to L4.
Although there are likely to be a number of contenders, all of whom have their own qualities to bring to the job, Mitchell’s ability to unearth top talents and indeed work to a budget are likely to impress the Reds’ hierarchy.
Whether the timings work out remains to be seen, especially with perhaps the most crucial window in over a decade on the horizon…
