Many Liverpool fans were disappointed at the club’s lack of transfer business this summer, with some suggesting the side needed to replace the outgoing Gini Wijnaldum if they wished to compete on four fronts this season.
The long-term injury to Harvey Elliott has further weakened Liverpool’s midfield options, with some supporters desperate for news of potential signings that could bolster LFC’s midfield options.
Reports from Italy have suggested that Liverpool are interested in the AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessié as he is available on a free transfer at the end of the season.
On the latest episode of our Journo Insight Extra Show, we asked Goal’s Neil Jones to let us know if there was any truth to the rumours that Liverpool may be interested in signing the commanding 24-year-old Ivorian.
Neil said:
“I asked the question this summer about Liverpool [signing Kessie], a lot of people, myself included, expected that they would sign a midfielder, Kessie’s name was one of those that came up. I was told no, he wasn’t one that Liverpool were looking at. I don’t know if that changes if he’s a free agent? Possibly, but the story you’re referring to suggested that Liverpool were going to offer big, big wages to convince him to go to Liverpool instead of Barcelona. I don’t necessarily see that happening, it would make sense for Barcelona after what they’re probably going to have to do in the coming years in terms of signing free agents, we saw that in the summer with Aguero, Memphis Depay and other people like that.
I haven’t heard anything to suggest Liverpool are really deep into this player. I think it might just be one that is performing quite well, he’s a midfielder, he’s out of contract. I think it’s quite a logical step to link him to Liverpool, but I wouldn’t be expecting him to come to Anfield.”
Redmen Reacts
It looks like those desperate for news of a future Liverpool signing may have to show a little more patience. Liverpool tend to track future signings for a long time, so the likelihood is that there would have been some interest in him this summer if they were truly interested in him.
Kessié has played well during his time at Milan and boasts a handy goal output. With goals from midfield lacking in recent seasons for The Reds, he would seem to be a decent option, but unless Liverpool are keeping very quiet in an effort to seal a deal, we do not expect to see him lining up for the Reds in 2022.
