“I Don’t See Liverpool Being In That Circus” – Journo on Wilfried Zaha

Liverpool achieved a second successive 1-0 victory at Anfield, with the Reds withstanding some late pressure from West Ham. Jürgen Klopp stuck to the 4-2-3-1 formation that paid dividends against Manchester City and Rangers, with summer signing Darwin Núñez starring on the night.

One player who could perhaps flourish in that formation is Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha, who has been linked with a move to Merseyside at the end of the season by Italian website Calciomercato. Zaha’s contract expires at the end of the season and the Ivorian is free to start negotiations with other clubs in January.

On the latest episode of our Journo Insight Show, we asked goal.com’s Neil Jones for his take on the reports.

Neil said:

“He’s in his last year of his contract. He nearly 30, I think, Wilfried Zaha. Good player, really good player. I don’t know about Liverpool. I don’t see Liverpool signing Wilfried Zaha. I think someone will, I could imagine a Tottenham taking a punt. I can imagine a few clubs taking a punt. He is a good player, but I think Liverpool will be swerving that one, personally. Olise looks a good player, Eze looks a good player, I really like the left back as well, Tyrick Mitchell. I watched Palace on Tuesday night and it was a really good game, and he was the star of it, Zaha. He gave a good interview afterwards as well. I don’t see Liverpool being in that circus.”

It feels like almost every year since Wilfried Zaha rejoined Crystal Palace in 2015 he has been linked to the exit door. Eye-watering valuations have come and gone, spectacular goals have been scored, full backs have been roasted (hello James Milner) and still Zaha ploughs on in south London. If this summer truly is the time for him to leave, it feels like he has missed the boat for a move to an elite club, so as Neil says, it would be a surprise if the 29-year-old were to end up at Anfield. The Ivory Coast international certainly has the quality to at least make the Liverpool bench, as he showed with his sublime finish at Anfield earlier this season. However, with LFC’s transfer committee being urged to lower the average age of the squad and look to the future, a move for Zaha feels fanciful at this point in time.
