To get the lowdown on what might, or might not happen at Liverpool in terms of departures from the club when the January transfer window opens, we stay down up with Goal’s LFC correspondent Neil Jones and asked him about the likelihood of any winter outgoings.
One player who has been linked a move is Takumi Minamino. The Japanese attacker left the club on loan at this stage last season and has been linked with a permanent or loan departure next month.
On the latest episode of our Journo Insight Show, we asked Neil whether Minamino’s days in a red shirt were numbered.
Neil said:
“It doesn’t feel like he will ever start games regularly. You’d think he should play the two League Cup legs, one of the league games, probably the FA Cup game (in January). That would probably be his best run of games in the side. I have my doubts over whether he will ever be that option. If you’re looking for a game changing signing for you at a lower level, like a Newcastle, like a Watford, is it worth the question? What would Liverpool say to that if it was a pretty good deal?”
Redmen Reacts
Taki has had a frustrating Liverpool career so far. He seems to have a skillset that would work in a Jurgen Klopp side, he is a good finisher and is good on the ball, but has never managed to string more than a few games together.
Part of the reason he was signed is the fact that he was available for just over £7million, which is a snip in the modern era. Any permanent move away from the club would surely mean a profit on that original fee.
Leaving on loan, as he did last season, does not seem like a sensible option, especially given the Reds will be losing two of their attacking force for at least a month.
His sale would only be justified if the club immediately put that money towards an attacking replacement in January.
