“I think he will sign the contract” – Neil Jones gives his thoughts on Mo Salah’s situation

Mohamed Salah is rated by many (his manager included) as the best footballer on the planet right now. His recent run of form is surpassing even his peak goalscoring season of 17/18, with the 29-year-old scoring a Goal of the Season contender in successive weeks.

Many have argued that the longer Salah’s contract negotiations drag on for, the greater the potential pay packet Liverpool will have to stump up. Those desperate for news may be comforted by the opinion of Goal’s Neil Jones, who believes the Egyptian King will eventually sign a new deal.

On the latest episode of our Journo Insight Extra Show, we asked Neil whether he had any updates on Mo’s contract situation, and what sort of weekly wage he could command.

Neil said:

“I can’t give you anything on the figures, it’s beyond my comprehension really. When you’re having negotiations about whether its £300,000-a-week or £500,000-a-week, it’s a lot of money. It’s a life-changing or a structure-changing amount of money for Liverpool, let’s say. He’s going to be the highest paid player the club has ever had, if and when, I think he will sign the contract, I’m consistently saying that.

I think you can see the happiness in the way he’s playing, I think you can see the passion, I think you can see the way he’s engaging more with the supporters, maybe more than he ever has? There was a post from him recently: ‘You give me strength more than you will ever know,’ you could see when he scored the penalty, he was pointing up to the top tier, really wanting to make a song and dance about that. He’s winning individual awards, he’s breaking more records: two more on Tuesday night, which almost pass under the radar. He’s now the all-time Champions League top scorer, he’s also the first player ever to score in nine straight appearances. Where else is he going to get it? I think that is enough to satisfy him.”

The possible right time for Liverpool to cash in on Salah was probably a season or two ago. The club thankfully chose not to do that though. Salah’s consistent performances have put him amongst the very best in the world, so it is reasonable for him to be paid at that level. The only reason FSG have to break their wage structure to keep him is due to his on-pitch brilliance. In a financial sense, they have become a victim of their own success – top players and top coaches deserve top dollar and they’ve signed top players to play for a top coach.

Hopefully Neil is right and we are hearing news fairly soon to let us know that Salah is committing his future to The Reds for the long haul.
