We’ve all turned our calendars over from 2021 to 2022. For some, that will mean Dry January and doing some laps of the park, but football fans across the world will be keeping an eye on the latest transfer updates!
There are several players linked with a move away from Anfield this January. We caught up with Goal’s Neil Jones and asked him about the likelihood of any winter departures.
One player linked with such a move is Neco Williams. The Welshman has only featured four times this season and is finding minutes hard to come by, with Trent Alexander-Arnold firmly ahead of him in the pecking order.
On the latest episode of our Journo Insight Show, we asked Neil whether Neco was heading for an Anfield exit in January.
Neil said:
“It’s difficult, I think Liverpool would expect there would be interest in him and I wouldn’t be at all amazed if there were loan links. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s loan interest there. I would be loath for Liverpool to let him go. It’s easy to say ‘get Gomez minutes’, but if Trent is out for a month, Gomez is playing right back every game, or Milner is playing right back. I want a right back in there, and I think Neco showed… even though Conor Bradley is a promising player… Neco is a step or two ahead of him in his development.”

It is a tricky situation for Neco. At 20, he may feel he needs a regular first team slot if he is to continue his development. On the other hand, training in world class facilities daily and being the understudy to one of the world’s great right backs could be something he is very happy to do! The performances of Kostas Tsimikas this season have been good enough that the drop off between him and Andy Robertson does not seem so severe. Neco needs to push on and try and narrow the gap between himself and Trent. With Salah now of at AFCON, Williams may even find himself slotting in at right wing as he did against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup.
