In a season where nothing is guaranteed, Mohamed Salah’s Goalscoring Touch Remains

By Tom Cunningham @TomCunningham75 Attempting to find positives in the current situation is difficult, both inside and outside of the chaotic football world. Liverpool have gone from the look of immortal mentality monsters to what some have described as mentality mice; they’ve gone from the champions of everything to an open invitation for three points. Yet, as all the glory is stripped away; the Club World Cup badge ripped away; Champions of Europe tag placed elsewhere, and the tint of Premier League champions turns to rust, one label has remained. And that is Mohamed Salah’s as the most clinical forward in the Premier League. With everything stripped away; with chaos ensuing all around him, Salah’s class has still remained; his ability to create those magical moments. And, it is these moments that are propelling him towards his third Golden Boot. Liverpool’s golden touch has well and truly faded; the Egyptian’s continues to glow as bright as ever. In many ways, this season, more than the previous glory-filled campaign, has cemented his place amongst the best. It speaks volumes that, even as Liverpool enter crisis mode, Mohamed Salah sits at the top of the goalscoring charts. Many critiques have taken aim at many in red this season- including Salah himself. But, with each shot fired, the ‘Egyptian King’ has dodged it in the form of another goal to silence any remaining doubters. The fact is, in a season we’d all rather forget, Salah is on course to create a memorable Golden Boot win. Should he secure the individual award, only Thierry Henry would have won it on more occasions than the winger once labelled a Chelsea flop. Yet, people will still doubt him and question his ability. But, the question is posed time and time again. Who is at the centre of every moment to remember? Every team has a player they turn to when needed most. So, who is Liverpool’s guy? Mohamed Salah. Whether it be Merseyside Derby stunners, Champions League Semi-Final heroics, title-sealing goals or, the most important of them all, a penalty in the Champions League final, Mohamed Salah has stepped up. And this season has been no different

Amongst all of the bad moments, Salah has been at the centre of the good. Against West Ham, it was his spectacular brace that gave us a glimpse of Liverpool’s identity once more. Against Leeds United, it was Salah’s hattrick that decided a 4-3 thriller. As Liverpool defeated Spurs in December, it was the Egyptian with the opener. Even as Liverpool have faltered, the goalscoring machine that is Mohamed Salah has remained- as proven in the defeat to Leicester City. The afternoon will be struck down as one to forget, but, again, the one moment to cherish came from Salah, who slotted home the opener with the class of a clinical goalscorer. As the full-time whistle sounded, Liverpool’s top-four hopes were thrown into doubt, but Salah’s class could not be questioned. It is the mark of a true player when they are able to produce those moments of magic even as the wildfire of a crisis spreads around them. And, as proven more than ever this season, Mohamed Salah belongs to be spoken about in the same bracket as some of the Premier League’s best. By Tom Cunningham – @TomCunningham75
