Almost a week into the summer transfer window and Alexis Mac Allister remains Liverpool’s only signing. Midfield signings remain the priority, but several defensive players have also been linked with a potential move.

One player renowned for his attacking instincts who is said to be on Jürgen Klopp’s radar is Eberechi Eze. The Crystal Palace midfielder is believed to be a possible target for the Reds and Manchester United. Sportbible suggested Eze’s status as a home-grown player could be a factor following the departures of James Milner and Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain.

On the latest episode of our Journo Insight show, we asked experienced LFC journalist Neil Jones for his opinion on Eze.

Neil said:

“I really like him. I think he’s got something really different about him for the way he plays.

“He does feel like one you could gamble on. I still think it would be a gamble because obviously, he missed 21/22 with that Achilles injury. Came back well season just gone.

“Eze… might just be an absolute dynamite gamble to take. Or he might be one where you push the button too early. You could get something really good out of it, or you could be disappointed.

“I think if he does move, I wouldn’t expect it to be now to a top club. I would expect top clubs to wait another year and say, ‘Can you follow up on your good season and have another one?’

“He’s a really good dribbler. Is he a real physical game-changer for Liverpool? Probably not. Not compared to maybe a Thuram or someone like that. There are questions over that.

“I’m not sure he’s exactly what Liverpool needs at this moment, but I do think he’s a footballer that’s got an awful lot of talent.”

Redmen Reacts

Eze is one of the most talented players playing for a bottom-half side and looks to have the ability to fit into a team towards the top of the table. His good form towards the back end of the season has just been rewarded with a well-deserved England cap. He scores at a rate of around one in four, which could seriously boost the goalscoring capabilities of Liverpool’s midfield. The question remains whether he is the sort of player the Reds are looking for at this moment in time. The likes of Khéphren Thuram and Manu Koné play in a deeper position, and many of the issues that arose last season came from a lack of form and fitness in that area. It would be a better use of resources to look for long-term replacements for Fabinho and Thiago, as opposed to adding attacking potency.
