James Pearce explains why we didn’t see Divock Origi at all until his surprise selection against AC Milan

Whilst chatting to Paul Machin on our Journo Insight Extra show, The Athletic’s James Pearce has revealed that Liverpool were expecting to be without Divock Origi this season as they thought he was going to be sold, which is likely why he hasn’t featured at all up until the game with AC Milan, where he was handed a surprise start after not being in the last few Liverpool match day squads.

When asked by Paul about Jurgen Klopp’s post-game comments, where he admitted his surprise at the lack of bids for Origi, Pearce said:

“I think that was partly explaining why Origi hadn’t even been in the squad just before the window has shut because Klopp was expecting someone to come in and make Liverpool a satisfactory offer.”

It was a surprise when Origi was selected for the Milan game given he wasn’t even on the last few match day squads but Pearce’s explanation makes sense.

Liverpool had been planning to be without Origi for the season as they’d decided to let him make a summer transfer, so they had obviously not done much, if any work, in terms of tactics and shape etc with the Belgian in mind.

The Reds were obviously open to offers for Origi but as suitable ones came in, Klopp now has the option of using the forward more often, and more importantly, the time to train and plan ahead for future games with that in mind.

Origi might not even be at Liverpool past the January transfer window but there’s a lot of games between now and then and it would make sense to use the forward in them, as he can’t just use the same attackers game after game after game.
