The best thing about city losing at the weekend was that it was just in time for us to get our game in hand out the way.

After being 3 up at half time, Liverpool stomped to victory with a 6-0 win over Leeds United. A comfortable win that had its shakey moments, the reds are well on track to hunt down Man City.

Matip finally got his wandering goal, Mo got a brace of penalties and another brace from Mane, you can see that no one was thinking about Sunday. Everyone was on league duties.

Here are my player ratings for tonight’s win!

Alisson – 6

Had a slip and was lucky to have Joel Matip come to his rescue, but was an otherwise comfortable clean sheet for Alisson as Leeds waited until the second half to have a pop on target!

Trent – 7

Was always a target for a cross pitch ball from Robbo and was always looking to send it forward himself. Managed to get lost upfield once or twice but that doesn’t detract from what an important performance that was for our right back.

Matip – 8

He did it. He finally did it. Furthest outfield player at the start of the move, Joel Matip flew through the entire Leeds team and used Mo Salah for a 1-2 before dinking it over Meslier. His defending was alright too. What a guy.

Van Dijk – 8

Virg brings a calmness to proceedings and it’s priceless. Usually when a centre back and a midfielder are passing it about at the back it can get nervy, (eg that slow pass to Alison), but Van Dijk and Jones also paired up well on multiple occasions and let play build up organically. Top performance from the Dutchman and is always a handy head to have in the box.

Robertson – 7

Robbo and Trent had a very similar evening tonight but our Andy had a belter. Always flying down the wing and forced the penalty for the opening goal, the Scotsman never seemed to run out of steam.

Fabinho – 7

Couldn’t fault Fabs for most of tonight. He did what he does best and even had a decent pop on goal himself. Solid performance all round and is a delight to watch him containing the attack around the opposing box. Love you Fabs.

Jones – 7

Had a busy night with a few battles in midfield but still managed to turn with our defence quickly and calmly get things moving. A few sloppy ones here and there but that’s me just being picky

Thiago – 7

Much like Jones in how he links up well and is always a reliable option for a quick pass, Thiago controlled play the best he could and caused problems for the hungry Leeds players who at times couldn’t get near him. He seems like it’s so easy but then when you see his substitution camera close up you see how tired he is from how much he puts in to his game.

Subbed off for Henderson in the 68th minute

Diaz – 8

If there was ever a player with a hunger to tie defenders in knots and move at warp speed to get past them, it’s this guy. He adds an extra creative dynamic to the attacking line, which is incredible considering we’ve now added 2 concrete world class options to our forward 3. Can’t wait to see him play again.

Subbed for Lord Origi in the 85th minute

Mane – 8 MOTM

Finishing off a slender counter attack in the 80th minute and cleaned up a scuffled effort from Lord Origi, Sadio Mane continues his blistering goal scoring form after his return from international glory. Always showing his pace and got dragged down by Luke Ayling in the first half for Salah’s second pen. The guy is insatiable and we love him for it.

Salah – 8

Salah gets a lot of plaudits for his desire more than anything else tonight, as well of course his two boss pens. It’s crazy to think the man was on a hat trick for most of the game but his teams mates were the ones to finish the story tonight. The Egyptian king shines once again by drawing players in with Trent and creating opportunities even though he had a couple of near misses in open play.

Subs

Henderson – 7

Came on for around 25 minutes and looked lively. Immediately partnering with Mo to manipulate the right flank, the captain marched us over the line with Milner in fine fashion.

Milner – N/A

Brought on to do his usual job at this time in the game and of course he kept the clean sheet but also kept us on the attacking foot against his boyhood club.

Origi – 10

The Lord himself shone on Sadio and said “here my lad, have another” and intentionally drew Meslier on to him so Mane could have his brace. Can’t fault him really.
