It’s almost like another Final Word show. Tim Great comments about Virgil. He’s a juggernaut. And there’s a major lesson here. Fans bitched when we didn’t move to Plan B in the summer. It got even worse with every dodgy defensive performance during the fall. And fine, we are all entitled to our opinion, and who knows whether going in for a £25m stopgap might’ve paid off. But for anyone acting like Klopp was an idiot, and couldn’t for the life of them understand what he was thinking…….please remember this moment. Even if he doesn’t do what YOU would do that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a plan. As Paul alluded to, defenders like Lovren and Matip would probably cost £35m in this market. Would you really have wanted Klopp to spend that kind of money for that kind of player back in August? By the time the guy bedded in we would have been within a dozen games of bringing in Virgil anyway. And even if we could afford both, which we probably can, that would preclude us from bringing in another defender this summer. Personally I’d rather give the current guys some time to see who works with Van Dijk and who doesn’t, and only then move on to fortifying our options. Klopp may not get it right everytime, but it’s time to give him the benefit of the doubt. Tim Mane definitely needed that scruffy goal (and that tap-in). We really needed him to restore the balance among the front three. And fun as it is watch Salah go nuts, it’s much healthier to have balance. There’s more than one reason for that too. In addition to making us less susceptible to dips in fitness or form, it makes us less susceptible to being raided by the likes of Barcelona or Real Madrid. The last three times a player has elevated himself above the pack we’ve promptly lost him. Suarez to Barca. Sterling to City. Coutinho to Barca. Thank goodness Salah isn’t in his third year of his contract here, or we’d have a real fight to keep him this summer (hell, we still might). Part of him hopes Mo challenges Kane for the golden boot, but another part of him hopes he cools down and other players pick up the scoring slack the rest of the way.
