Liverpool Weekly News Roundup
After their success in the 2022 Carabao Cup, Liverpool knew that important games would continue to come their way right until the final game of the season. This week the reds faced another two must-win games. First of all, Liverpool hosted Norwich in the fifth round of the FA Cup, then at the weekend, West Ham travelled to Anfield to try their attempts at securing the double over Liverpool this season. Monday 28th February
The Reds’ continued their celebrations after their Carabao Cup triumph. The Champions Wall outside Anfield got its update as the record number nine was placed under Liverpool’s all-time League Cup wins.
Tuesday 1st March
The start of the month in which Liverpool play six massive games on their hunt for another trophy this season. After this week, the Reds face tough challenges from Inter Milan, Brighton, Arsenal and Man United.
Jürgen Klopp provided an injury update on Thiago after the Spaniard pulled out of the Carabao Cup final following his injury in the warmup. Klopp told the media that Thiago was fine but was not fit again and that he more than likely will miss 3 to 4 games. [Liverpoolfc.com]
Wednesday 2nd March
Liverpool faced Norwich City in the 5th round of the FA Cup knowing that a win would earn them progression into the quarter-finals.
Alisson came back between the sticks, Mane made his 250th appearance for the Reds and Jota was back in the team as Liverpool comfortably managed a 2-1 win over the Canaries.
A brace from Taki Minamino in the first half was enough for the Reds to earn the victory. Norwich did threaten now and again but Jürgen and his men proved that they have the ability see out a game, something they may have to get used to on numerous occasions this season.
Minamino was deservedly awarded the Player of the Match award.
Thursday 3rd March
Joel Matip was shortlisted for the Premier League Player of the Month award for February. Having played every minute of Liverpool’s four top-flight games during the period getting three clean sheets, a goal and an assist the centre-back was rightfully placed on the shortlist.
Klopp was nominated for the Premier League’s Manager of the Month award after his successful unbeaten month of February.
To make it three for three regarding Premier League awards, Sadio Mane was also nominated for an award. His bicycle kick against Norwich earned him a spot amongst the Premier League Goal of the Month nominees.
The quarter-finals of the FA Cup were drawn as Liverpool will face either Nottingham Forest or Huddersfield Town away from home. The tie between the championship clubs is on Monday the 7th of March with the winner earning a home draw in the quarter-final against Liverpool, played between March 18th and March 21st.
Friday 4th March
The Reds celebrate the birth of one of their all-time legends, Sir Kenny Dalglish. The Scotsman who won 8 League Championships, 5 League Cups, 3 European Cups, 3 FA Cups and a European Super Cup as a player and manager, turned 71 on this day.
Klopp confirmed that Thiago and Matip would both miss the West Ham game at Anfield, due to injuries and illness.
Saturday 5th March
Liverpool faced West Ham in their 27th Premier League game of the season. A win would put the Reds back to 3 points within the reach of Man City with them playing Manchester United the next day.
The fans and the players showed their support before the game as #FootballStandsTogether with the people of Ukraine.
Konate came into the team and Diaz kept his place in the front three as Sadio Mane scored his 14th goal of the season to earn Liverpool another win in the Premier League this season. Sadio’s tidy finish was just about enough to secure a narrow 1-0 win over David Moyes’ West Ham.
A hard-fought victory for Liverpool as Trent earned the Player of the Match award for his 16th assist of the season and brilliant goal-line clearance. The performance of Luis Diaz must also be noted as the Columbian yet again proved that he is capable of leading Liverpool’s front line.
Van Dijk set a new incredible record in the English top-flight as he became the player with the most unbeaten home games in a row. The Dutchman has now gone 60 games without losing at Anfield! The record was previously held by Man United’s Lee Sharpe.
Sunday 6th March
The Reds celebrated the birthday of ex Belgian goalkeeper Simon Mignolet who turned 34 on this day.
Manchester City secured a 4-1 win over Man United to keep their six-point lead intact with an extra game played over Liverpool.
Yet again another unbeaten week for Liverpool Football Club, a phrase which is becoming a normality at this point of the season. Long may it continue. This week the Reds face Inter Milan at Anfield in the second leg of their Round of 16 tie in the Champions League, Liverpool has a two-goal advantage going into the game after a successful first leg at the San Siro. Remember, away goals do not count in this year’s Champions League. Then on Saturday, an away trip to Brighton for the early kick-off as the Reds continue to fight for the Premier League trophy.
