After the excitement of Dominik Szloboszlai sealing a switch to Liverpool this summer, the Reds appear to be in no hurry to slow down in their transfer business. Reports released early this week suggested that long-admired target Kephren Thuram has been cast aside with Southampton’s Romeo Lavia moving to the top of Jurgen Klopp’s wish list. The final step in Liverpool’s midfield overhaul seems to be in motion.
The ever-reliable Fabrizio Romano explained that contact with the Belgian’s camp for the past two weeks and are expected to open negotiations soon.
The 19-year-old would be direct competition to Fabinho and with already having a year of experience in the Premier League, could represent a long-term replacement to the Brazilian.
This week on our Transfer Insight show, Dan Clubbe spoke with David Lynch (@dmlynch) on the realistic chances of Romeo Lavia making the switch to Anfield this summer.
David Lynch says Romeo Lavia is Liverpool’s ‘ideal’ midfield signing!
David said:
“We’re in preliminary stages at the moment, there’s definitely been contact on the agent side, again, Liverpool are fully aware of what they need to do to get the deal done. I think Southampton are clearly going to try and hold out for that top-end price if they can, but, I think Liverpool and other clubs think they can negotiate that down to something a bit more acceptable.
“Nothing quite firm yet. What’s happening quite clearly with Liverpool dropping out of the Thuram race, obviously they liked Szoboszlai in that number eight position, if there is a clear need for anything now in that midfield it is for a young, holding midfielder. That’s why Lavia looks like such an obvious target for them from this point on. Maybe we will get hit with another surprise name out of nowhere who’s got a release clause we don’t know about.
“With Lavia, he ticks so many boxes that I would be surprised if Liverpool don’t try and move on with this one. In terms of he wouldn’t take up homegrown positions because of his age and would be a homegrown player eventually. That is something that is going to be a consideration for Liverpool as they move on through this window, that they do have to look after the homegrown issue, particularly with some of the names who have been linked with exits.
“He looks a real, real possibility if they are going to go for a third midfielder which it looks like they’re going to do. I think it is an exciting move because he is a player with an awful lot of potential, looks a really good fit and there’s a succession plan for him to come into that Liverpool midfield.”
Redmen Reacts
The Southampton ace looks set for a big move this summer, and for Liverpool, he makes perfect sense. His age, price tag and potential meet all the requirements for a Jurgen Klopp signing. For his age, the Belgian is already Premier League proven and has international experience having won one cap for the senior side following a superb youth career.
The fact he does not impact the Reds’ homegrown issue is hugely beneficial as it would allow them to target any defender with no restrictions placed upon them.
It is a deal that will need to be done quickly but if they do manage to get this one over the line, Klopp’s midfield rebuild will be complete.
