Liverpool have 14 first-team players out on international duty, with half of the fixtures played in the Nations League competition. It’s seen injuries, goals and mixed performances across the games; here is a roundup of their international action…

Netherlands: Virgil Van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, Ryan Gravenberch, and Jeremie Frimpong

The Dutch have had an unbeaten international campaign with a win away at Serbia and a draw against Jurgen Klopp’s Germany, courtesy of an added-time equaliser from Cody Gakpo.

The winger, alongside Virgil Van Dijk and Ryan Gravenberch, all featured in both games, with Gakpo and Van Dijk being the standout players for Oranje.

However, Gakpo sustained an ankle injury that potentially will see him out for several weeks and has seen him return to the Axa for further treatment.

Xavi’s side will hope to continue the unbeaten streak with games against Greece and Serbia again this week.

France: Bradley Barcola and Jeremy Jacquet

France’s first two games back after the third-place thriller against England have seen them return to winning ways.

Two one-nil wins with two different squads saw Jacquet and Barcola start the second game, with Jacquet being the standout player.

The centre-back had lots of praise from fans via social media to couple up with his quality performances in a Liverpool shirt so far this season, having a 92% passing accuracy, four tackles and four recoveries.

He still came out in the post-match interview voicing his disappointment in his performance, especially his passing (50% long ball accuracy).

A mentality giant who will be eager to return to French action when Zidane’s side face Italy and Belgium again over the next week.

Hungary: Dominik Szoboszlai and Milos Kerkez.

Hungary’s rocky campaign in the Nations League has seen them lose to Ukraine and then draw with Northern Ireland.

Captained by Szoboszlai, they are still looking for their first goal in the international break.

Milos Kerkez has struggled at left back, whilst Szoboszlai has been doing the heavy lifting for the side in attack.

The goalless draw at Northern Ireland saw goalkeeper Balazs Toth get man of the match after a strong display and clean sheet, but it is also a reflection of the struggles the attacking line has to score goals.

Szoboszlai and Kerkez will be hoping to help Hungary to a first win and goal against Mamardashvili’s Georgia and Ukraine over the next week.

Sweden: Alexander Isak

Isak’s strong start to the season was continued for Sweden as he opened the scoring in a 2-1 win against Romania.

The Reds’ number 9 met a beautiful threaded pass from Brighton’s Yasin Ayari with a powerful strike that was too much for the strong palm of Ionut Radu to keep out.

Isak is now injured with what is thought to be a minor thigh injury and has returned to Liverpool for further treatment.

Uruguay: Ronald Araujo

Araujo was involved in both friendlies against Japan and South Korea in Asia, which saw them lose 3-1 to Japan but beat South Korea 4-1.

The defender also found himself on the score sheet in the 3-1 loss, which added to his good performances.

He will be looking to end on a high when Diego Forlan’s side face India on their final stop of their Asian tour.

Germany: Florian Wirtz

Germany’s new life under Liverpool legend Jurgen Klopp has not gone to plan.

A draw against the Netherlands and a shock loss to Kostas Tsimikas’ Greece see the Premier League and Champions League winning manager waiting for his first win in charge of his nation.

Wirtz came on as a 65th-minute substitute but had no major talking points from his performance.

It adds more pressure to the midfielder who has had a slow start with the Reds.

He will be looking to get some confidence against Serbia and Greece this week.

Greece: Kostas Tsimikas

Tsimikas and Greece have had a fantastic start to the international break.

Two wins against Serbia and Germany have put them in good stead for the rest of their Nations League campaign.

Tsimikas has been a huge part of both games, which saw them have to cope with a lot of attacking pressure.

He managed to get himself an assist in the victory over Serbia, which capped off a top performance.

He will want to continue the good performances and shock results against the Netherlands and Germany this week.

Will Liverpool Sue Manchester City?

Wales: Lewis Koumas

Koumas has been starting in the number 9 for Wales in this international break.

It’s been a tough two games against Portugal and Denmark, but Koumas did not start in the 2-0 loss to Denmark.

Koumas will be looking to bounce back with a game against Norway in Cardiff tomorrow.

Georgia: Giorgi Mamardashvili

Mamardashvili has had two games in goal and conceded once with Georgia.

A 99th-minute Shea Charles winner and a clean sheet in the draw against Ukraine show he has had a good campaign so far.

After the confidence booster of Spurs, he has taken that into international duty with two solid performances.

He will be looking for another two clean sheets in the final two games against Szoboszlai and Kerkez’s Hungary and Kieran Morrison’s Northern Ireland.

Spain; Victor Muñoz

Liverpool’s summer signing has featured for the World Champions during the break and continues to look worth every penny spent by the Reds. 

England: Rio Ngumoha 

Having been left out of the squad to face Spain, the teenage sensation came off the bench for a dazzling cameo against Czechia on Tuesday night. becoming the third youngest player to represent England at the senior international level in a competitive fixture. 

Elsewhere, Trey Nyoni has impressed for England at youth level whilst Keyrol Figueroa scored the only goal in a 1-0 Honduras win over Jamaica earlier this week. 

Liverpool will have to wait just over a week before they return to face top-of-the-table and under-siege Manchester City at Anfield on October 11th.
