Liverpool U18s 2-3 Newcastle United U18s: Rio Ngumoha shows more promise on his first start, but young Reds drop to the bottom of the Northern section.

Kareem Ahmed scored his first two league goals of the season, making it 1-1 – after which Joe Bradshaw missed a penalty – and 2-3.

Ethan Ndiweni bagged a brace and Joe Brayson took and scored a penalty at 1-2 but denied the former a hat-trick.

Ndiweni began the game ominously and forced the ball home despite ‘keeper Bailey Hall’s best efforts in the 31st minute.

Seven minutes later, Liverpool youngster Kareem Ahmed equalised from close range before Ngumoha’s left-footed effort crashed against the underside of the bar.

The Reds were awarded a penalty four minutes into the second half when Joe Bradshaw danced his way into the area before being brought down, but Bradshaw lifted himself up to take the spot kick and lifted his effort over the bar.

It was a sliding doors moment in the match as it transpired as moments later Ndiweni rounded Reds’ keeper Bailey Hall to double his tally for the afternoon and put the visitors in front once again.

Newcastle were awarded a penalty and Joe Brayson cooly placed his effort from 12 yards into the bottom right corner to score even though Hall had guessed correctly.

With 30 minutes remaining, a short corner routine eventually freed up Ahmed in the area and the attacker found the far corner to set up a grand finale which ultimately would not materialise despite total dominance from Marc Bridge-Wilkinson’s side.

The Magpies’ senior team drew 1-1 against Manchester City simultaneously – better news for the men’s team watching away at Wolves.
